Nintendo’s debut Switch gameThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildcontinues to be wildly popular among casual fans and the speedrunning community alike, though the sequelBreath of the Wild 2may not come until 2021.Breath of the Wild’s approach to dungeon design, allowing players to fight Ganon without touching a single trial or Divine Beast, has given it a diverse array of speedruns since 2017.
One of the more awe-inspiringBreath of the Wildspeed categories that has garnered interest recently involves Link having to find and feed every single dog scattered across Hyrule. A mechanic within the game involves bonding with canines for them to dig up buried treasure, so the goal of the speedrun is to get all of that treasure as fast as possible after completing the Great Plateau tutorial.

The current world record in “All Dog Treasures” is a little over an hour-and-a-half, held by a 24-year-old English runner named Vivoxie on Twitch (or @VivoxeSR on Twitter), according to speedrun.com where six attempts have been listed since Swedish runner Birdo uploaded a nearly two-and-a-half hour run in November 2019. Some players choose tomasterBreath of the Wild’s combat, others choose to feed all of its good boys.
Getting to each of the 15 checkpoints (as delineated by Vivoxie’s segment splits) scattered across Hyrule is the easy part: Waiting for each dog to eat a buffet of fruit that may or may not roll around due to the game’s physics engine is the real time killer. This is especially true of the run’s final stop inTarrey Town, which changes the game’s mapand adds an extra dog as Link helps finish its construction.
Waiting on dogs to eat isn’t nearly as chaotic as something like theLink to the Pastspeedrun at Awesome Games Done Quick 2020, but it’s certainly a lot more wholesome.
Withrumors aboutBreath of the Wild 2leakingall over the Internet, clearly the most important question fans should be concerning themselves with is how many more dogs the sequel to this popular entry inThe Legend of Zeldaseries add? Ganon may use his Triforce of Power to raze the land, but he will never stop everyone’s desire to see more adorable pups.
