Warner Bros. Pictures has officially pushed back the release date of DC’sWonder Woman 1984again. The highly-anticipated sequel to the original Gal Gadot superhero film is now scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25th, 2020.
Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with Geoff Johns and David Callaham,Wonder Woman 1984will find Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince coming into conflict with Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah during the Cold War. Initially scheduled to hit in theaters in late 2019, Warner Bros. later opted to releaseWonder Woman 1984in on June 5th, 2020, roughly three years after the first film debuted to record-breaking box office success. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent closing of movie theaters prompted the studio to first delay the release ofWonder Woman 1984until August 2020 andthen again to October 2nd of the same year.

Variety reports sources say Warner Bros. was waiting to see howChristopher Nolan’sTenetfared at the U.S. box office before making a decision about how to proceed withWonder Woman 1984’s release. “Patty is an exceptional filmmaker and withWonder Woman 1984she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love,” said Toby Emmerich, Warmer Bros. Motion Picture Group chairman in a statement. “We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays.”
“First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for ‘WW84’ couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie,” said Jenkins. “Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!” Jenkins directed both installments of theWonder Womanfilm series and plans to end her time with the franchiseafter the third chapter of the story.
The new Christmas day release date ofWonder Woman 1984puts the DC film in theaters just one week after Warner Bros.' remake ofDune. While nothing regarding a change toDune’s release date has been announced at this time,the first official trailerfor the Denis Villeneuve film curiously came without a release date listed.
While the latestWonder Woman 1984delay may be disappointing, it likely comes as no surprise to those who have been watching as the COVID-19 situation fails to improve in the United States. In fact, movie theater owners were reportedly bracing themselves forWonder Woman 1984to be delayed yet again due to a combination oftheaters in key markets remaining closedand the already existing limits on venue capacity in others.
Wonder Woman 1984is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
