The Xbox Game Studio inXile Entertainment made headlines when it was announced the developers are looking into making a game forXbox Series X using Unreal Engine 5, which Epic Games unveiled as part of Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest. Before it puts that project into full swing the studio is finishingWasteland 3, and based on behind the scenes information revealed this week it will definitely be an interesting game.
Wasteland 3has a group called the “Gippers” who worship Ronald Reagan as a God and aJoker-like psychopathnamed Vic Buchanan according to inXile Entertainment senior writer Nathan Long and studio head Brian Fargo during an interview with IGN posted to YouTube Friday. These are many “rabbit holes” players can find in a story that picks up immediately after its predecessor with the Desert Rangers helping the state of Colorado in exchange for assistance building a new home in the post-apocalyptic United States.

Fargo put emphasis on how the touch choices which can be made in its dark universe will affect the narrative. For example he said players have the option to capture, kill, or recruit Buchanan, and that each of those paths will affect how other NPCs in theWasteland 3’s Colorado react to their presence because “the world is always watching.”
Wasteland 3, which wascrowdfunded in 2016, will have a more cohesive narrative thanWasteland 2according to Long, one that presents itself immediately to the player and will open up possibilities for multiple endings while dealing with “weird things” such as the conspiracy theories surrounding the Denver Airport. Fargo said sometimes the camera will shift from an isometric angle to a first-person perspective to dial in on important characters, and there are “constant payoffs” for different personal stakes.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemics,Wasteland 3was delayedfrom its original May 19 release date until August, so players have a bit more time to decide whether they are interested in getting on board. It sounds like a lot of care was put into the game’s narrative based on the IGN interview, so it should be worth considering.
For those who are interested in a different flavor of post-apocalyptic content, Bethesda recently confirmed thatFallout 76’s seasonal updates will be free to play. Though the two will apparently be similar in their portrayal of wacky characters to come across, the top-down style of RPG that theWastelandseries presents is uniquely its own.
Wasteland 3will be available August 28 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
