Garlic is one of the first weapons players will encounter early on when startingVampire Survivors. It can even be unlocked after the player’s first run since all it requires is consuming five Floor Chickens, the game’s health pickup. Garlic is also the starting weapon for Poe Ratcho, who can be unlocked after upgrading the weapon to Level 7 for the first time inVampire Survivors.
The somewhat dubious-looking vegetable is very powerful when it comes to crowd control and isone of the best starting weaponsin the game. It becomes an even bigger asset towards the end of a run once it has evolved into the Soul Eater, which can simultaneously hurt all incoming enemies and help the player when in dire health. This guide can help players easilyget the Garlic evolution inVampire Survivorsand provide some other combos that can synergize with the smelly onion relative.

The Garlic evolution can be unlocked during any run by opening a chest after receiving and upgrading to aLevel 8 GarlicandLevel 5 Pummarola. A Pummarola is apassiveVampire Survivorsitemwith a heart icon that heals the player with +1 HP per second once fully upgraded.
Both items can be obtained through leveling up or found on the ground in some stages. Turning on the Show Guides option in the pause menu will mark the locations of all items available on the stage while playing.
The evolution, called Soul Eater, changes the ring-like aura that initially surrounds the player to a black hole that pulses. Any enemies that touch the black aura will receive damage and has the possibility to generate hearts that will heal the player. The damage of Soul Eater is also increased whenever the player heals from the small hearts, passive healing, or other sources.
Its versatility makes it work with almost every character, as the purpose of Soul Eater is to destroy the enemies before they can reach the player. It is perfect for builds on less spacious maps, such asthe Inlaid Library, where Soul Eater can cut off enemies trying to flank the player from above or below them.
Passive items that work well with the evolution include the Candelabrador, a must-have that expands the aura’s area and creates a bigger damage zone for enemies to wade through. The Attractorb is also required for those strong enough to idle through the run since it increases the distance of automatically picking up XP gems to continue leveling without moving much.
Meanwhile, some of the best Arcanasthat pair well with Soul Eater include Tragic Princess (III), Sarabande of Healing (VI), and Blood Astronomia (XXI).
Finally, while there is no in-game reward for obtaining Soul Eater for the first time, there is one playable character who has it as a starting weapon. The secret character Peppinois a literal giant tree that starts with Soul Eater without the need to find and upgrade its ingredients first. While it might be one of the easier characters to unlock, Peppino is a difficult character to use as it is absolutely immobile due to being a tree.
