Summary
ThePokemonseries is home toa wide selection of fantastical characters, both human and Pokemon alike. With each region geared around cooperation between the two species somehow, to see and help either species thrive is a magnificent feat in and of itself, as shown by the events of games such asPokemon Black and White.
But even in such a collaborative world, there are still some characters in thePokemonuniverse that are lacking in terms of their luck. Whatever the case may be, it seems that these characters are doomed to be the victims of whatever horrid events come their way.
7Murkrow (Pokemon Diamond and Pearl)
Murkrow is one of many Dark-type Pokemondeemed to be unlucky, but it is unlucky in a different sense of the word. Rather than experiencing ill fortune itself, Murkrow is usually the one causing ill fortune to someone else, leading to this Pokemon being considered an omen among the people of the Sinnoh and Hisui regions.
According to its Pokedex entries fromPokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl,Murkrow has a penchant for shiny things and luring people into remote locations, such as mountaintops and dark forests. InPokemon Legends: Arceus, the people of the Hisui region are able to defend against Murkrow’s bad luck with a special chant.
6Bounsweet (Pokemon Sun and Moon)
On the other end of the spectrum, the beautiful Fruit Pokemon Bounsweetis not an omen at all. In fact, it has become a treasure due to the sweet scent it emits from its body. Unfortunately, this scent has made it the target of many natural predators, namely Toucannon and Greedent.
While other similar Pokemon have ways of warding off predators, Bounsweet has no such way of doing so. It can only flee from danger in such a way that no one would ever know it was in danger. As a result, Bounsweets are usually under the protection of their evolved forms, Steenee and Tsareena.
5Wally (Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
A shy but aspiring Trainer from Petalburg City, Wally is known for his desire to travel the world outside the Hoenn Region with his own Pokemon team. Unfortunately, one of the main deterrents to this dream is his asthma-like illness, which is the primary reason for his imminent move to the cleaner Verdanturf Town.
To make matters worse, Wally also had to deal with the concerns of his family, who often fret about his health. In the end, however, Wally learns to overcome both his physical and psychological weakness thanks to his Ralts and the player, as shown by his iconic appearance and battle at the end of Hoenn’s Victory Road.
4Grimsley (Pokemon Black and White)
Being the Dark-type specialist of the Elite Four, Grimsley may seem like the harbinger of misfortune, especially withhis very powerful Dark-type teamduring theBlack and Whiteseries. But as it turns out, Grimsley has actually experienced his fair share of misfortune before his tenure as an Elite Four member.
InPokemon Masters, it is revealed that Grimsley was born into wealth, but he had to deal with numerous adults who wanted to take advantage of him, resulting in him developing a habit of reading people. Eventually, his family lost their fortune, which solidified his philosophy of winners taking everything and losers getting nothing, a belief he readily applies to all of his battles.
3Caitlin (Pokemon Black and White)
Like Grimsley, Caitlin isanother powerful member of Unova’s Elite Fourwith a tough backstory to her name. In her case, Caitlin is burdened with psychic powers that she once found very difficult to control. As a result, Caitlin was once forbidden to battle, even having her valet Darach of the Battle Castle in the Sinnoh and Johto regions battle in her stead.
According to Caitlin herself, whenever she lost a battle in the past, her psychic powers would run wild and cause great harm to the people and environment around her. Fortunately, in the present, Caitlin can control these powers, but she still sees them to be a burden nonetheless.
2Lillie (Pokemon Sun and Moon)
Being one of the main protagonists inPokemon Sun and Moon,Lillie is central to the game’s plot due to her connection to Lusamine, the president of the Aether Foundation, and Lillie’s mother. Naturally, the deteriorating relationship with her mother is a major source of sorrow for Lillie, as shown by the player’s first encounter with Lusamine.
Perhaps due toher volatile relationship with her mother, Lillie is noticeably conflict-avoidant and usually leaves it to the player to stand up to any present danger. However, after Lusamine travels through the Ultra Wormhole, Lillie solidifies her resolve to bring her back, as punctuated by her change to a more lively outfit.
1Bede (Pokemon Sword and Shield)
In his first appearance inPokemon Sword and Shield, Bede is presented as a cocky and snobby young man who is confident in his endorsement by Chairman Rose of the Pokemon League. This cockiness stems from the fact that it was Rose who got him out of an orphanage many years ago when Bede was abandoned by his family and picked fights with other children.
As the game progresses, Bede becomes nigh-obsessed with collecting Wishing Stars to remain in the good graces of Chairman Rose. Ultimately, this results in Bede becoming the victim of his own hubris, as his brazen destruction of a sacred mural at Stow-on-Side in search of some Wishing Stars leads to his disqualification from the Gym Challenge.
