Summary
A nostalgia-inducingTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlestabletop RPG Kickstarter campaign has just cleared its funding goal. TheTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesfranchise is one of the biggest superhero properties outside of Marvel and DC, spawning several cartoons, movies, comics, and video games over the past three decades. The last few years have been especially exciting for fans of the Heroes in a Half Shell, as 2022 saw the release of the retro-styleTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, while a more modern,God of War-style adaptation ofthe popularTMNT: The Last Ronincomic storywas announced back in March.
These games come on the heels of several successfulTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlescartoons and movies, and it can be easy to forget that the franchise was once a black-and-white indie comic created by just two people in the early 1980s. During these humble beginnings,TMNTcreators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird partnered with Palladium Books to publishTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Other Strangeness, atabletop roleplaying RPG rulebookset in the original Mirage Comics universe. Based on Palladium’s Megaversal RPG system, this game allowed fans to create their own mutant animals and embark on adventures in a gritty urban setting.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Other Strangenesswas ultimately overshadowed by the classic 1987TMNTcartoon and the massive franchise that followed it, but a newKickstartercampaign is aiming to revive the tabletop RPG for the modern day. Palladium Books, the original publisher of the RPG, recently announced its plans to releaseTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Other Strangeness Redux Edition, an updated sourcebook with clarified rules, new artwork, and behind-the-scenes content and tributes from severalkey figures in theTMNTfranchise. The campaign has already surpassed its goal ahead of its November 28 deadline, with roughly $424,751 raised as of this writing.
Palladium Books promises a variety of different editions and extras, such as a black, white, and red variant edition that recalls the originalTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlescomics and special variant covers by Kevin Eastman andTMNTcomic alumni Sophie Campbell. Exclusive features for the Kickstarter include specialTMNTdice sets modeled after the Turtles and their arch-nemesis the Shredder, as well as miniatures of severalTMNTheroes and villains. There will also be a special Mutagen Green Liquid Core dice set with ooze-like fluid that swirls when rolled and aTMNT-themed game screen.
While theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Other Strangenesstabletop RPG tends to be overlooked amidthe laterTMNTgaming franchise, this recent Kickstarter and the fact that it has already surpassed its fundraising goal is a sign that it has its fans. These fans will likely get the chance to play Palladium’s updatedTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesrulebook next September, which is the tentative release date for this successful Kickstarter project.
