Exoprimalis not setting the world on fire right now. On PS5, it is sitting at a 58 on Metacritic. That is presumably not the score Capcom was hoping to see when they decided to launch a new franchise. The reviews may be low but that does not mean there isn’t fun to be had in the game.

For Xbox players, they are all set to experience the game the way it was meant to be played: free.Exoprimal, despite the negative reviews, does have a lot of good ideas. Some are even better than other multiplayer games right now, so let’s look at some proof. It’s worth checking out even if it is not going to be remembered at the end of 2023.

7The Story Setup

How many games start with a weather report of dinosaurs flooding the streets via portals? There is one example and that game is calledExoprimal. It’s such a ridiculous idea that it has to get points for at least that.

The plot involves players being a new recruit in a dinosaur cleanup team. They are then sent to an island where they are forced to replay old scenarios through virtual reality. An evil AI wants to gather data and that’s the whole setup. The overall narrative is not that engrossing but the concept is solid fora multiplayer game.

6Failing Missions

There are a few different modes players will go through in the game. All involve slaying dinosaurs in some form or another but these slaying missions can be tweaked. Sometimes players have to capture a node, or they have to move a cube through the environment.

Two teams of five are competing for the same goal and sometimes they must do battle. The thing that setsExoprimalapart is that losing is not the end. The story will still progress no matter what and that’s a feature that maybe more multiplayeror action gamesshould take into account.

5The Class System

There are a lot of class-based andhero-based multiplayer gamesout there right now.Exoprimalbegins with a good number of classes and a few cooler ones unlock later after some story progression. The suit variety is standard in one of these types of games.

There is the heavy bruiser class that also has a shield called Roadblock. There is the healer class called Witchdoctor. The Deadeye is the all-around class that is good with rifles and the list goes on. The variety isn’t the special thing that raisesExoprimalabove the pack though. It’s that classes can be changed while in battle which helps add to the strategy of any given match. It also looks cool to swap between suits.

4The Suit Designs

The ability to switch out suits is worthy of applause but the actual design of each suit also deserves some praise. The graphics are not going to wow anyone on any system. The dinosaurs are not realistic and the human characters lack flair. The suits are phenomenal though and a lot of care went into them.

Let’s look at the Witchdoctor as one example. It appears to be wearing a hood like a typical cleric insome other RPG. However, this hood is actually a glider that Witchdoctors can ride on the battlefield. That’s just one example of how the suit designs of this game are rad.

3Guiding Directives

Dead Spacesolveda big problem for navigation in video games when it launched in 2008. The guiding light that led players to objectives was ingenious and yet other developers didn’t immediately grab onto that idea. Games still struggle to copy or improve on that landmark ability butExoprimalfully embraces it.

The game is clearly not the first to use it, but the guidance in it goes beyond the light trail. It’s easy to navigate through the menus and figure out what’s going on in the heat of battle.Exoprimalis a simple game that lacks variety but this also leads to clarity.

2Invading With Dinosaurs

When it comes to game invasions, theDark Soulsserieshas to be the king. It’s fun to go in, decimate another player, and then leave. Game invasions work differently inExoprimalsince it is based fully on multiplayer. There are items that can help players lasso dinosaurs, like T-Rexes, that can then be sent to invade the enemy team’s game.

Being able to control a dinosaur is still a novel idea and it’s even more rare in a multiplayer game like this. The mechanic is far from perfect, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to cause chaos as a dinosaur inExoprimal.

1Quick Defenses

This isn’t a huge win for the game above other mechanics but the defense mechanisms are worth mentioning. Building is a loose term because players aren’t going to put a lot of thought into the gameplay. It’s not likeFortnitewherein playershave to collect materials and then physically build things houses.

InExoprimal, players can gain items like walls or turrets if dinosaurs drop them. Clicking a button will set them up automatically and they can either be dismantled manually or they can be destroyed via enemies. Not thinking about building defenses but still having them in the game is a plus.
