The Outer Worldscould not be releasing at a better time for developer Obsidian Entertainment and their publishing partner Private Division. TheFalloutseries is in a weird place following the release ofFallout 76and fans of the series likely won’t see a possible return to form for almost a half-decade.

In the meantime, it looks likeThe Outer Worldscould not only scratch thatFalloutitch, but be the smaller-scope game that can fill in theFalloutvoid. Let’s now look at 5 reasons why it will scratch thatFalloutitch and 5 whyThe Outer Worldswon’t.

10Won’t: Length

The Outer Worldsis a game very much inspired byFalloutand shares many similarities that fans will enjoy. In terms of differences, the biggest glaring one will be the length of the game.Falloutgames are often lauded as role-playing games that offer hundreds of hours of gameplay content for fans to experience at their leisure. ForThe Outer Worlds, you’re going to be looking at around 30 hours on average. That’s still a solid gameplay experience and in 2019 that might be the perfect length for games like this.

9Will: Memorable Characters

One glance at the reveal trailer forThe Outer Worldswould have made you understand that the interesting and uniquecharactersof theFalloutuniverse have made their way to space. Obsidian Entertainment looks like they’re continuing to deliver characters that players not only love engaging in conversations with but can become lifelong favorites for fans.Fallout: 76may not have had any human non-playable characters, but boy howdy willThe Outer Worldshave plenty.

8Won’t: Not Bethesda

There’s an ongoing debate as to whetherFallout 3orFallout: New Vegasis the best game in the series. One is made byBethesdainternally, while the latter was made by Obsidian Entertainment, the developers ofThe Outer Worlds. Depending on where you land in that discussion it could have an impact on how much you’ll enjoy the game. Though they’re eerily similar, both Bethesda and Obsidian do unique things that make their games feel like their own, and Bethesda had no involvement in thisFallout-like game.

7Will: New Vegas Veterans

When you have a game being developed in the same genre as one of their previous titles then you’ll likely see the same quality and polish put into it.The Outer Worldswas made by several people responsible forFallout: New Vegas, which is considered by many to be the best game in the franchise. So, not only isThe Outer Worldsmeant to invoke aFallout-like experience, it’s developed by the people who brought together and delivered the best of that series in many ways.

6Won’t: Same, But Different

Fallout: New Vegasmay have been developed by Obsidian Entertainment, but the development of the game was still overseen by Bethesda to some capacity. With the release ofThe Outer Worlds, there are no Bethesda fingerprints on it which will result in a slightly different game.

That doesn’t mean that it will be better or worst thanNew Vegas, but rather that it will assuredly be different in some way. Don’t expect it to be a copy ofNew Vegaswith a space skin on top of it.

5Will: Interesting World

WhenFalloutfans first realized thatThe Outer Worldswould ditch a post-apocalypse for a space adventure it left them a little cautious. Since then the numerous previews and teases have showcased an interesting world teeming with plenty of interesting landscapes and eccentric characters both friendly and dangerous. If the world ends up being as alive and captivating as it’s looked then Obisidan Entertainment may be looking at the start of a new special franchise for themselves moving forward.

4Won’t: No Apocalypse

If you’re the type of person who lovesFalloutbecause of the setting thenThe Outer Worldswill not scratch that same itch. The game trades in a world in the post-apocalypse for a science fiction adventure among the stars. That doesn’t mean you won’t be encountering weird and dangerous creatures alongside some nefarious circumstances, you just likely won’t have to deal with radiation or zombie-like enemies. With it releasing on Xbox Game Pass it’ll be worth trying no matter what your preferences are.

3Will: Side Quests

TheFalloutfranchise has never been revered because of its main story because the core of what makes the series great is the atmosphere, writing, and characters. A lot of times the best and most memorable experiences happen during side quests that have the player doing something that is often inconsequential.

The Outer Worldslooks to feature plenty of missions that take players off the beaten path and it seems that there may be some handy rewards for going out of your way to do them.

2Won’t: Scope

The truth of the matter is thatThe Outer Worldsdoesn’t have the size, scope, and depth of aFalloutgame. This is due to several factors including budget, schedule, and vision of the project for the developers. That being said, it seems that the game will take around 30 hours on average to complete which means it still offers a sizeable experience. If you’re the type ofFalloutfan who loves to spend hundreds of hours in the world, then maybe look at what replaying the campaign could provide you in terms of replayability.

1Will: The Humor

During the reveal trailer forThe Outer Worlds, there’s a part where the humor shines and viewers get a glimpse at the types of jokes and bits that you can look forward to in the game’s full release. The recent release ofBorderlands 3was a glaring example of how humor can make or break a game for lifelong fans and incoming first-time players of a series. If Obsidian is to be trusted thenThe Outer Worldswill showcase the best of what makes the humor in Fallout memorable and worthwhile.
