After many years,The Matrixis coming back to theaters withThe Matrix Resurrections, a continuation of the series, although no one is sure what direction it will take said series in. With anew teaser forThe Matrix Resurrectionsrevealing ticket sale times, it’s sure to draw a sizable crowd.

With how little is still known aboutThe Matrix Resurrections, there’s a lot of speculation and hype about what it could be about and how theMatrixseries as a whole could be effected. One sphere beyond film where it might touch is video games, and it seems there may be at least one new addition on that front.

A leak revealed the existence of what seems to be aMatrixvideo game project titledThe Matrix Awakens. As of this article, little is known about the title except that it will be on the PSN and, by extension, on the PS5 and that it is being made in Unreal Engine. In fact, it is billed as “an Unreal Engine 5 Experience.” This comes fairly soon on the heels of aMatrixcrossover withFortnitebeing leaked, illustratingThe Matrix’s attempts to re-integrate into the popular zeitgeist.

As of this article it is not known how much, if at all,The Matrix Awakenswill actually tie intoThe Matrix Resurrections, or even if it will be a full game. After all, if it is being billed as an “experience,” so it may simply prove to be a tour through parts of the Matrix and its lore that have not been revealed before. If it is a game it may have little to do with the movie, despiteThe Matrix Resurrectionsreuniting the main cast, something players would no doubt love to control.

WhileThe Matrix Resurrectionscould achieve successor be an enormous failure, the success or failure ofThe Matrix Awakensstands largely apart from the film. PreviousMatrixtitles have stood on their own and become favorites even when they were adaptations of less popular films.

Hopefully the end result will be a good video game inThe Matrix Awakensand a good film inThe Matrix Resurrections, but even one of the two will be cause for celebration. While the film’s writer declared thatThe Matrix Resurrectionssubverts blockbuster expectations, only time will tell if it does so in a good way or a bad way.

The Matrix Resurrectionscomes to theaters and the HBO Max streaming service on December 22nd, 2021.
