The Forestis a horror survival game with a few twists and turns. Players take control of a man whose plane crashes on a mysterious island and has his son kidnapped by the locals. He later discovers the locals to be vicious cannibals, who are accompanied by a variety of terrifying monstrosities that have something to do with the mysterious lab in the mountains.
The Forestis one of thebest mature-rated survival gamesavailable. This is down to the excellent gameplay, which includes plenty of crafting. However, there are some items that players can only find by venturing into various caves that can be explored around the island. The spoils in here include some of the best axe-type weapons available in the game.
6Plane Axe
When players startThe Forest, one of the most important beginning items is the plane axe, also known as the starting axe. This weapon, while weak, will help players get started in a number of ways. In addition to introducing players to the combat style ofThe Forest, the plane axe is also one of the initial weapons they can use to cut down trees.
Crafting and base-building are a large part ofthe engaging survival gameplayinThe Forest. As players adventure across the island, it is hugely useful to have safe areas for sleeping and keeping stores of items, and places to return to when being chased. Axes are the primary means of cutting down trees in the game. Though the damage done by the plane axe is minimal and the blocking it provides is terrible, it helps players get started.
5Crafted Axe
Players will be able to create their own improved axe relatively early inThe Forestor steal one from a cannibal, as this is one of the few weapons they will wield over the course of the game. The crafted axe is made from a stick, a rock, and a piece of rope. It can be created almost immediately from cloth found around the plane crash site, a great early example of theimpressive crafting in the game.
The crafted axe is an incredibly slow weapon, one of the slowest inThe Forest. However, it is worth acquiring because the blocking it provides is so much better than that of the plane axe. It also takes fewer swings to fell a tree, and it can be upgraded through further crafting. If players wish to do so, they only need to use sap and feathers to upgrade the speed, making the crafted axe a powerful weapon.
4Rusty Axe
This item cannot be crafted, only discovered in various cave systems around the island. The rusty axe is an improvement over either of the earliest available weapons of this type inThe Forest. Players will find that the rusty axe provides some of the best blocking of any weapon available in the game.
It is also faster to swing naturally than the crafted axe, and deals more damage than either of the previous weapons. It takes as many swings to cut a tree with the rusty axe as it does with the crafted axe. Ipgrades are similarly available through crafting to improve this one if players wish to make it even more dangerousagainst certain types of mutants.
3Climbing Axe
The only axe in the game that cannot be used to cut down trees, the climbing axe is one of the quickest weapons in the game. It is also one of the few items that players will almost certainly need if they wish to progress through the main plot ofThe Forest. Players mustfind the climbing axe in a specific cavein order to obtain it. This cave is labeled “Cave 9” or “Ledge Cave” on the cave systems map.
The climbing axe allows players to climb up walls while wielding it, making it a hugely valuable tool. It can also be used in combat, providing one of the fastest natural weapon speeds in the game. Unfortunately, both the damage dealt and the blocking are disappointingly low, but the climbing axe is still of the utmost necessity to obtain.
2Machete
Technically listed within the axe class of weapons inThe Forest, the machete is the only non-axe weapon that can chop down trees. It is also an excellent weapon to obtain. Players can find it by getting to the bottom of the sinkhole in the center of the island. Since this can usually only be achieved late in thegame’s fascinating narrative, it is a valuable and rare weapon.
The machete takes as long as the plane axe to chop down trees (usually seventeen attacks), and it can also dismember bodies and cut down sticks or shrubs. The machete comes with almost no blocking abilities at all, but is even faster to swing than the climbing axe, making it incredibly fast. It also deals much more damage, matching the crafting axe in terms of combat power.
1Modern Axe
The best overall axe in the game, in addition to being one of the best overall weapons available, the modern axe is a wonderful tool to acquire. It can only be found in the hidden stash room in the cave labeled “Cave 2” or “Hanging Cave” on the cave systems map. The modern axe can chop down trees in nine hits, almost half the rate of the plane axe or machete.
The modern axe does almost as much blocking as the rusty axe, while swinging quickly and dealing more damage per swing than any other axe-type weapon inThe Forest. Aside from a chainsaw or explosives, there is no faster way to cut down trees, and the modern axe is regarded as perhaps thebest overall weapon available inThe Forest.
