Summary

Tekken 8is right around the corner, and as such, the developers at Bandai Namco have recently finished announcing the remaining members of the base roster.Tekkenhas been around since 1994, andTekken 8’s launch will coincide with the series' 30th anniversary. Over its long history, the franchise has amassed approximately 100 playable characters. While the developers have a huge arsenal to pull from, each new game inevitably gets some new characters as well. One ofTekken 8’s newcomers is Victor Chevalier, a sword-wielding spy of French origin. Victor is a new character for the series, though his move set resembles a previous guest character.

Victor Chevalieris one of the three new characters being introduced inTekken 8,alongside Azucena and Reina. These three newcomers join 29 veteran characters, bringing the base roster to a total of 32 members. While 32 characters is a lot to launch with for many modern fighting games, this is in line with other recentTekkentitles.

Victor Chevalier Brings a Sword to a Fistfight

The most obvious thing setting Victor apart from other cast members is his use of a sword, something he shares with Yoshimitsu. While the two both use weapons, Victor is actually more similar toFinal Fantasy 15’s Noctis, who appeared as a guest character inTekken 7. He was one of the most accessible characters inT7, clearly designed to help bring in new players. While Noctis was middling at best throughout much of the game’s life, he was a great way to learn the basics ofTekken, so including a similar character to help bring back the audience he attracted makes sense.

Like Noctis, Victor Chevalier has moves that let him teleport and rush in towards the opponent with ease. Beyond this, however, the character appears to be a bit more fleshed out, with moves that resemble those ofKunimitsuand Raven, two ninjas from the series. While Victor will surely inherit some of Noctis’s ease of use, the moves that are new to the character will make his actions harder to predict and give the character greater technical depth. His use of a pistol and teleportation means that he should be one of the more effective roster members for controlling space.

Victor Fits Neatly into Tekken Lore

Victor, likeReina, is filling in a roster gap left by a previous character. While Reina’s background is shrouded in mystery, Bandai Namco has actually given fans a comprehensive breakdown of who Victor is. Victor Chevalier comes from a long line of knights, and since he was a small boy, he has dreamt of helping people around the world. He worked his way up through the French Navy, taking on tough cases and, to everyone’s surprise, always came out on top. Since leaving the Navy, he now runs the Raven Unit, a special forces team, while also working for the UN. Victor is famous for his penny-pinching nature and for leaving a trail of rumors in his wake wherever he goes.

Victor Chevalier is also known for his womanizing, a trait that, when combined with the fact he is a spy, likens him to the iconic movie hero James Bond. His ties to the UN and Raven Unit also situate him neatly in the world’s lore already. While Victor’s role inTekken 8’s storyremains to be seen, his unique combat and flashy sense of style already make him a standout in the title. Given that his voice actor is the illustrious Vincent Cassel, it would be unsurprising to see Victor play a big role in the upcoming title. This question of his role and importance in the franchise going forward will likely be answered whenTekken 8is released early next year.
