This information was revealed by an insider named Zippo, who hasmade both correct and incorrect Nintendo predictions in the past. According to them, players ofSuper Mario Bros. Wonderare “in for a rude awakening” if they’re expecting another easy 2D romp, as Nintendo has chosen to up the difficulty while still making sure the game is accessible enough to players of all stripes. As a result of these changes, the game has been “absolutely decimating testers.” Zippo compared the difficulty to that ofSuper Mario Bros. 3, which Nintendo internally cited as its biggest source of influence. Proof of this can be found just by looking at the gameplay physics shown in the announcement trailer.

Zippo also took the time to reveal some other details they managed to pick up on, such as the story also taking a page fromSuper Mario Bros. 3. Apparently, Mario and co. must liberate the rulers of neighboring kingdoms, namely the Flower Kingdom, where Bowser is launching his next attack for a currently unknown reason. Another similarity toMario Bros. 3is the sheer number of power-ups planned to be in the game. In addition tothe power-ups confirmed forSuper Mario Bros. Wonderthus far, several returning ones are also present, including Mini Mario, Ice Mario (the variant fromNew Super Mario Bros. Wii), and Tanooki Mario.

Of course, all of the above should be taken with all the salt in the world, but it doesn’t stopSuper Mario Bros. Wonderfrom deserving every ounce of hype it gets. It’s the first 2DMarioin a decade, it’s innovating upon countless aspects of the gameplay, and it even marks the first time in six years whenaMariorelease gets to directly compete with aSonicrelease. Fans should be delighted by these revelations, and with Zippo promising more insight to come, there is certainly a lot to look forward to up until launch day.

Super Mario Bros. Wonderis coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch on October 20.
