Super Mario Bros. Wonderwill feature couch co-op play with up to 4 players who can choose from several different characters such as Luigi, Daisy, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and Toadette. Defeated players float around in-game as a ghost and can be revived by another player before their ghost timer runs out. As for the online play, Nintendo has taken an interesting direction; other online players will appear on the map and in courses in real time as “shadows,” and while there is no direct interaction between the player and other online players, they canshare items such asSuper Mario Bros. Wonderpower-upsand send greetings via an emote system. A downed player can also revive their character by bumping into another online player’s shadow.
Another new mechanic is the Standee, which is a cardboard cutout-like figure that can be placed on courses that will be able to revive the player or other online players. According to an insider,Super Mario Bros. Wonderis a challenging game, so these assist mechanics are likely going to be a big help.
Super Mario Bros. Wonderplayers can also create rooms that will allow them to get together with friends and join courses together, a mechanic that allows players to race through courses was also described in the presentation. The inclusion of couch co-op and online features is a welcome touch. Fans will have to wait for launch to see how it all comes together.
Super Mario Bros. Wonderlaunches on October 20, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
