A new graphical comparison video by news site Nintendo Life’s YouTube channel shows off various improvements made from the original releases ofSuper Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine,andSuper Mario Galaxywith their respective re-releases in the upcomingSuper Mario 3D All-Starscollection for the Nintendo Switch.
The video starts with showing the first game inSuper Mario 3D All-Stars, 1996’sSuper Mario 64for the Nintendo 64 — specifically comparing gameplay of Bob-omb Battlefield. In the comparison video, it’s made quite clear that the game’s textures have been heavily improved and smoothed out due to the game’s up-scaled resolution. Everything looks significantly more clear, with the game’s original blurriness seemingly gone entirely.

Next,Super Mario Sunshinegets a direct comparison between the GameCube version and the new Switch remaster. This game benefits not only from up-scaled graphics, but also from widescreen support that greatly increases the player’s field of view. The game, likeMario 64, has better clarity due to its higher resolution, and everything being nicer to look atmakes this a big one-up over the original game.
Finally, the video looks atSuper Mario Galaxy. This title perhaps benefits the most from the graphical improvements, with the title originally feeling a little held back by the Wii’s hardware at the time of its release.Galaxy, now able to fully embrace anHD resolution and new controls, lacks any jagged edges that some feel plagued the original game.
While it’s overall a bit of a shame thatSuper Mario 64will not receive true widescreen support in this collection,the graphical and gameplay improvements are still significant. It’s nice to see bothSunshineandGalaxyin true HD for the first time ever, and both of their improved graphics are noticeable based on this video.
Some fans are unhappy that these re-releases are mostly emulated on console and not true ports, but regardless it seems that many are still very excited for this new collection. Releasing Friday,Super Mario 3D All-Starswas announced duringtheSuper Mario35th Anniversary Direct earlier this month, meant to help celebrate the red plumber’s 35th year since his series' inception on the NES.
Many fans have speculated that the release of this collectionmeans big things for Link and theLegend of Zeldafranchise in 2021, given it turns 35 next year, with many theories already starting to pop up online. Perhaps Nintendo will reveal more about its plans as the year comes to a close.
