Summary
Hundreds ofStarfieldplayers have recently taken online to point out what they deem is the biggest flaw with the RPG’s New Game Plus mode. AlthoughStarfielddelivered an intriguing implementation of New Game Plus, these newly surfaced complaints underline how Bethesda’s take on the feature remains a fairly polarizing topic among the fandom.
Warning! Gameplay spoilers (NG+ mechanics) for Starfield ahead.ThewayStarfield’sNew Game Plus mode worksis that players only get to keep their levels, skills, powers, and research projects when starting another campaign. Meanwhile, their inventories, outposts, credits, and ships all get reset after finishing the main story quest.Starfieldattempts to balance things out a bit by rewarding the player with a unique ship and armor that get better with each subsequent playthrough for the first six and ten times, respectively. However, many fans have so far found those rewards to be underwhelming compared to what they’re forced to give up in exchange.
And while inventories and credits are both easy enough to rebuild, a vocal portion of the player base appears to be particularly annoyed with the fact that they can’t carry over their ships to New Game Plus. A thread bemoaning that state of affairs hit the front page of theStarfieldsubreddit over the weekend, prompting hundreds of predominantly like-minded responses. Some of the fans chiming in on the discussion said they were devastated to find themselves without their spacecraft fleets after starting another playthrough, while others revealed they are consciously avoiding finishing the main quest because they’re not ready to lose all of theircustomStarfieldships.
Others still asserted that they won’t even consider starting another playthrough until there’s a way to side-step this drawback of the New Game Plus mode. The wait for such an option might be fairly long, not least because Bethesda itself is somewhat unlikely to ever change the fundamentals of how NG+ works due to story-related reasons. And while many players reluctant to lose their ship fleets appear to be well-aware of that fact, they are still holding out hope thattheStarfieldmodding communitywill eventually address this perceived shortcoming of New Game Plus.
But for that to happen, the game will likely first have to receive official modding support via its Creation Kit, which isn’t scheduled to release until early 2024. Bethesda historically launched such tools around four months after their respective games, with that track record indicating that theStarfieldCreation Kit is plausibly looking at a late January or early February debut.
Starfieldis available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
