The known universe inStarfieldis full of stuff to grab, but the player’s pockets won’t be able to carry them all. Luckily, ships can store all manners of items to a greater degree, though this isn’t totally unlimited either.

Hauling and storing loot inStarfieldis much more convenient compared to Bethesda’s previous titles just from the fact that ships have actual cargo containers. When these containers do run out of carrying capacity, players still have the option to get bigger ones to allow for even more space to store the resources and trinkets they find during their interstellar journey. Here’s how to do that.

How to Increase Ship Carrying Capacity in Starfield

All ships in Starfield can have their cargo capacities expanded by either adding more cargo modules or upgrading the existing ones. To do this, speak with a ship technician on any spaceport andask them to modify a ship. This will send players to the ship customization screen. Technicians can usually be found next to a Trade Authority kiosk.

At the customization screen, enter building mode by pressing the appropriate button listed on the bottom side of the screen. From here, players will be able to attach a variety of parts on any of the available nodes on the ship itself (denoted by white, circular snap points). On the controls list, players should see the “Add” function. Press the related button for this (for keyboard users, this is bound to “G” by default) to open up a list of parts.

Customizing a ship in Starfield

There is a dedicated cargo list in the parts menu featuring all the cargo containers players can place on their ships. These usually vary in terms of overall mass, carrying capacity, and of course, price. Players can walk away by simply attaching the largest cargo container they can get, though expect the ship’s overall mobility to take a hit.

If a ship’s mass is too high, then players may be forced to add extra engines and landing gears to it. Stronger models for these ship parts become available later once players unlock B and C rank piloting certifications, allowing for more space and cost-efficient builds.

Most cargo containers can only be attached to the sides of a ship, though there are some that can be attached to the underbelly. Players whowant to smuggle contrabandinto faction-controlled space will have to purchase and install shielded cargo containers instead of normal ones.
