AStardew Valleyplayer has shared a moment in the game that left them puzzled, when their child reached the toddler stage and seemingly changed genders. The odd moment is out of the ordinary forStardew Valley, though other players have provided some guidance with plausible ideas as to what happened.
The popular life sim lets players run a farm while they make friends and start relationships with villagers from the town. After getting married, players canstart a little family on theirStardew Valleyfarm, parenting or adopting up to two children with their spouse. While the kids can’t reach adulthood regardless of the amount of time passed on the farm, they do have life stages, taking them from swaddled infants to rambunctious toddlers notorious for zipping around the house at random.

Reddit user andStardew Valleyplayerprintoad shared a screenshot of their two children, and expressed their confusion, looking for answers from the community. The screenshot shows the player, their spouse, and their two children standing side-by-side in the middle of the room. According to the player, they had a daughter and a son, but when the son reached toddler age, a pink-clad female sprite appeared instead of the typical male toddler sprite that wears blue.
It’s a particularly odd occurrence, if only because the game doesn’t ordinarily allow a player to have two children of the same gender. The gender of the firstborn, or the first-adopted child, will be randomized, and the second is always the opposite gender, so the player ends up with a daughter and son. Outside of this shift, though, it doesn’t seem like anything significant changed, so it’s unlikely to have a major impact onStardew Valley’s gameplay.
While some players pondered the implications of this gender change, the reality of the situation is that it’s most likely due to a bug that arose from a mod, or conflicting mods. The presence of mods was confirmed by customized outfits in the screenshot, as well as prior posts by the player indicating that they were looking into modding the game. It’s not clear what mod or mods may be conflicting with each other, especially with the PC version ofStardew Valleyhaving a expansive and varied modding scene. However, changing the way a game works at any time, especially on an existing save, can lead to some oddities, even in a 2D life sim likeStardew Valley.
