The upcoming Jude Law-led Disney Plus seriesStar Wars: Skeleton Crewalready has plenty going for it. But now it’s got a pair of Oscar-winning directors on board for one of its episodes. At this point, one could probably say that these particular directors have done, well,Everything Everywhere all at Once.
Skeleton Crewofficially wrapped filmingearlier this year, effectively hammering home the promise that the series will premiere in 2023. But aside from that update and the knowledge that Law would play a key role in the show, Lucasfilm has been playing things pretty close to the chest. The most known at the moment is that it’s set afterReturn of the Jediand that it will focus on a ragtag group of kids who get “lost in theStar Warsuniverse.” But now, one more bit of info has finally been revealed.

One Take Newsreports that Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Academy Award-winning directors known together as the Daniels, are on board to direct at least one episode ofSkeleton Crew. The Daniels were the driving force behind A24’s Oscar powerhouseEverything Everywhere All at Once, which should perk up the ears of even many who may not have taken note of the upcoming series otherwise. Since the series has completed filming, it stands to reason that the duo has already directed their episode. But what can audiences expect?
Everything Everywhere All at Onceis seen by many as an absurdist masterpiece, quickly wowing viewers throughout 2022 before being declared the most-awarded film of all time with its slew of accolades. This includes a whopping 11 Oscar nominations and 7 wins. The Daniels collectively took home the awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay while Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis all claimed similar wins for their performances. Stephanie Hsu, who brilliantly played Joy, was also nominated. Suffice it to say, getting the Daniels for even a single episode will be a true boon forSkeleton Crew.
Skeleton Crewwas conceived on the set ofSpider-Man: No Way Homewhen director Jon Watts andThe Mandaloriancreator Jon Favreau came up with the idea during that film’s production. Focusing on a small group of children lost in the expansiveStar Warsuniverse, the show has already drawn some parallels to otherkid-focused projects likeStar Trek: Prodigy, which features a similar premise. It’s not often these days that a live-actionStar Warsseries is primarily focused on children.
But then again,Star Warsis a kid-friendly franchise by its nature. A show doesn’t have to be made specifically for young audiences for those same viewers to enjoy it. One of the few projects in the franchise that kids probably wouldn’t enjoy isthe surprisingly successfulAndor, which proved just how matureStar Warscan be. So maybe something likeSkeleton Crewcan be the perfect foil for that sort of vibe. Plus, if it’s willing to bring on the directors of something as unique asEverything Everywhere All at Once, maybe it’s willing to push the envelope in more than a few ways.
