There are only a few constants in life: death, taxes, and several newStar Warsprojects in production at any given time. Given the sheer permeation the franchise has achieved throughout the entertainment industry as well as countless others, it’s almost hard to imagine things going back to how they used to be, with a range of years or even decades between newStar Warsofferings.
In aChristopher Nolan-esque spin on things, there are even constants within that constant ofStar Warsdomination. One such mainstay is the presence of Anthony Daniels as relatably neurotic protocol droid C-3PO, a character he has embodied regularly since the franchise’s inception in 1977. So it should come as little surprise to see Daniels suited up and ready for action once again. But rather than the shiny gold exterior fans have grown to expect from 3PO, this new outfit is rather stretchier and, ironically, quite a bit more high-tech.

The veteran actor recently posted an image to his Instagram account that seems to suggestsome new C-3PO contenton its way in the not-too-distant future. Featuring himself in a motion capture suit and sporting a pose reminiscent of a vaudeville act, Daniels made sure to clear up any confusion with plenty of hashtags confirming the involvement of his famous droid character and theStar Warsseries. “Finally,” he posted in the caption, “a new suit - that fits!” This is likely in reference to issues he had in the past with the fit of the full C-3PO costume.
Speculation would suggest that this particular mocap session has something to do with anupcoming droid-focused specialon Disney+ titledStar Wars: A Droid Story. The special, announced in 2020, will be an animated feature focused on a new character guided by C-3PO and his counterpart, R2-D2. This would fit in with the motion capture equipment, as nobody needs a full suit of metal when recording voice over, at least unless they’re really dedicated to method acting.
This wouldn’t be the first time Daniels provided the voice for an animated version of C-3PO, as he’s been doing such things periodically sincethe infamous and regularly teased Star Wars Holiday Specialway back in 1978. The English theater actor turned science fiction icon has voiced the character in dozens of video games and animated features over the years, including a number ofLEGO Star Warsprojects and even the animated seriesThe Clone Wars. So one more notch on that belt should be no biggie for a seasoned pro like him.
There’s still no word on whenStar Wars: A Droid Storywill eventually release, but this teaser from Daniels should indicate that the production is mostly on track. However the special turns out, it’s definitely heartwarming to see everybody’s favorite-ish protocol droid back and ready to panic once again.
