Summary

Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin stole the show inSpider-Man: No Way Home. However, his final look in the film was almost different.

Spider-Man: No Way Homewas the end of Tom Holland’sSpider-Manorigin story. It also saw Andrew Garfield and Tobey Mcguire return to play Spider-Man alongside a handful of their villains. Although Sandman and The Lizard look more or less the same as their original appearances, Electro, Dr. Octopus, and Green Goblin got new looks for the film. Electro stepped away from the all-blue design, Dr. Octopus added some Tony Stark nanotech to his mechanical arms, and theGreen Goblin ditched the maskand ended up being more terrifying without it.

Concept art featured inSpider-Man: No Way Home - The Art of the Movieartbook shows a different look for Dafoe’s Green Goblin inNo Way Home. This look includes wearing pieces ofIron Man’s Mark VI ArmorfromIron Man 2. Additionally, it looks like Norman Osborn traded in his glider for one of Mysterio’s drones. He’s also not wearing the mask in this concept art, which might mean that the choice to have him not wear the mask was decided early on.

An alternate look for this design paints the Iron Man armor purple and Mysterio’s drone green. This version looks much better compared to the one with red armor. The Goblin’s purple and green colorway looks clean. Adding more purplemakes the Green Goblin costume resemble the comicsmore than the Raimi design.

The Iron Man suit elements are cool and could have referenced Norman Osborn becoming the Iron Patriot in the comics. It may have been cool to see this version of the costume on the big screen. Green Goblin could use Iron Man’s weapons, like his repulsor blasts or shoulder rockets.

However, most fans seemingly agree they went in the right direction for Green Goblin’s costume. The purple hood and goggles were a better way to reference the comic book costume and still be able to watch Dafoe’s brilliant acting performance. Additionally, one of the biggest complaints about the first twoSpider-Manfilms in theHometrilogy involves howthere is too much Iron Man. Having Spider-Man’s greatest villain wear an Iron Man suit may not have gone over well with some fans.
