Today marked the premiere of the2021 PlayStation Showcase event, where Sony hosted a variety of developers to promote projects coming to the PlayStation 5 in the near future. Said developers include Sony’s own first-party studio, Insomniac Games, which finally announced the development ofMarvel’s Spider-Man 2with a brand new teaser trailer, one that confirmed Venom as one of the many new villains to debut in Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe.
Venom’s appearance in the trailer is small but serves its purpose. The villain makes his “entrance” emerging from the shadows of an alley and uses his one line of dialogue to address the mysterious narrator of the trailer, accepting his challenge to defeat him in battle. Now,Venom’s voice has always been guttural; it’s like that to give the character a chilling presence and unsettle those who hear it, but it’s particularly effective in this trailer, and Insomniac Games has revealed why.

TheMarvel’s Spider-Man 2developer took to the official PlayStation Blog to reveal Tony Todd as the voice of Venom in its growingSpider-Manuniverse. Todd portrays the infamousCandymanin the horror movie series by the same name, and the deep, guttural sound of his voice propelled him to horror movie infamy. Simply put, he’s a natural, perfect voice for Venom, who’s supposed to be the most monstrous and “frightening” of Spider-Man’s reoccurring villains.
Insomniac also revealed that the voice actors of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter, respectively, will return to their roles forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, and with the way Ryan Schneider — the Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games — talks about the duo, Miles will be a playable character in the title, meaning players will get to use him to battle Todd’s Venom right alongside Peter. In other words, there won’t be any need to wait for a “Spider-Man: Miles Morales 2” to play as the black-and-red clad web-slinger.
It’ll be interesting to see how Todd handles Venom whenMarvel’s Spider-Man 2releases. Again, his voice perfectly matches the tone and atmosphere Venom creates. If the one line Todd delivered in this game’s announcement trailer is any indication, players are in for an appropriately creepy villain whenMarvel’s Spider-Man 2launches, and they’ll get to hear plenty of him considering the ending ofMarvel’s Spider-Manset Venom up as one of this sequel’s headlining antagonist.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2arrives in 2023 for the PS5.
