With SEGA wishing to celebrate theSonic the Hedgehogfranchise’s 30th anniversary in style, the company announced some new games for the blue blur. The Sonic Central Digital Event unveiled games like theSonic Origins collection and a brief teaser ofthe nextSonicgame being released in 2022. One big game announcement that was also shown wasSonic Colors Ultimate, a remastered version of the 2010 original on the Wii. With the game approaching its September release date, SEGA uploaded a video comparing the two versions.
A few weeks ago, SEGA had uploaded footage showcasing many different stages in the game. One of the latest shown wasthe fourth act of Planet Wisp, one of the later worlds explorable inSonic Colorsand homeworld of the Wisps, the central focus in this game. The video was uploaded on the channel for a short time before being unlisted. It had already highlighted some of the changes that were made to the game, and seeing Sonic blitz through the level in 60 FPS was a treat for fans. This new HD Updates Spotlight trailer shows not only more of the remastered visuals in the stages, but also some new features.

The first comparison made is between the different versions of the game’s first level, Tropical Resort, which highlights the enhanced lighting thatSonic Colors Ultimatewill boast over the original. Other levels like Starlight Carnival and Aquarium Park were also shown off 4K resolution, with some levels also being given improved textures. Other things that were shown off include theTails Save feature, where, if the player dies, Tails will bring them back to the last platform they were on.
There will also be a new “Rival Rush” mode pitting Sonic against his robotic rival, Metal Sonic. Players can race against Metal Sonic through different stages of the game, with rewards being given if they manage to win. This ties into Metal Sonic’s appearance inSonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps, meaning that the robot doppelganger won’t be limited to appearing in the animated shorts.
Some other details that had been shown off in this video were the new Jade Ghost Wisp, which will allow Sonic to access some hidden areas, as well as customization options. These includes unique gloves, shoes, and boost cosmetics for Sonic, but also customizable controls for the player. WithSonic Colorsbeing one of the more beginner-friendly games in the franchise, this is looking to add accessibility for players, letting them customize the game to suit their needs and playstyle. Whether it’s exploring the new visuals done for the levels or racing against Metal Sonic,Sonic Colors Ultimateis looking to be a promising remaster for fans to enjoy.
