Marvel Studios’She-Hulk: Attorney at Lawstarring Tatiana Maslany, best known for playing all the clones if the beloved sci-fi seriesOrphan Black, will join the vast stable of MCU shows currently finding a home on Disney Plus, and it appears the series will have a slightly different take on Jennifer Walters' origin.

She-Hulkis set to please fans new and old, withcameos from Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth) and Wong (Benedict Wong) alongside Jennifer Walters' adventures as a wise-cracking, fourth-wall breaking She-Hulk, slotting alongside similar Marvel properties likeDeadpool. One thing that appears new is a revised origin for the character, changing her up from the origins created for her by Stan Lee and John Buscema.

A new featurette shows how theShe-Hulkseries creates its own, feminist spin. Instead of being saved by Bruce after being caught by gangsters, she and Bruce get into a car accident where their open wounds mingle their blood and leave her with a wacky new set of powers (and a desire to start wearing clothing that can stretch rather than constantly rip). The changes keep her from having to be “saved” and they don’t put a limit on how far the character could go as far as her powers extend. From there, the feisty lawyer - whom the series is establishing as already being in her cheeky, fourth-wall-breaking modern form - starts to come into her own, finding a work-life balance between her duties in court and her responsibilities asthe newest member of the Hulk family.

When the 1970s/80s seriesThe Incredible Hulk(featuring Bill Bixby as the perpetual loner, David Banner, and Lou Ferrigno as his alter ego, The Hulk) andThe Bionic Woman(a spin-off ofThe Six Million Dollar Manstarring Lindsey Wagner who gaming fans know from her voicework in theElder ScrollsseriesandDeath Stranding) debuted, Marvel wondered if the producers of theHulkseries were gunning on creating their own female spin on the main character. Wanting to jump the gun and secure the copyright, they decided to create their own She-Hulk first.

Inthe originalShe-Hulkcomicsfrom the long, long ago 1980s, the character of Jennifer Walters was established as a cousin of Bruce Banner who got shot to piece by gangsters led by Nicholas Trask, a crime lord. Bruce, who was going to tell her what had happened to her found that she was dying and knew that he was the only relative on hand who could give her the life-saving blood transfusions she’d need to, well, not die. His irradiated blood has a side effect, however, not only saving her but transferring a more limited version of his power (because women were seen as weaker).
