SaGa Emerald Beyond is another of Square Enix’s SaGa games, and like the others in the franchise, it can be tricky to master. Sometimes, new players can feel overwhelmed by everything being thrown at them at once.
Thankfully, the combat in the game is pretty easy once players get a good foundation and understanding of it. This guide will help players learn the basics of combat and how everything works; that way, they can win any battle thrown at them.
Combat Basics
When players are first thrown into battle, they can choose what techs and spells their characters can use during that round of battle. Techs are attacks that have a little sword beside them, and they will happen during this round of battles. Spells are the ones that have staffs beside them, and they will take time for the characters to chant them, so they may not be used until the next round. If neither is chosen, the characters will defend themselves. Additionally, there is a chance that a character attacking will defend themselves, but this isn’t guaranteed.
The timeline at the bottom of the screen shows which characters will attack when so players can easily decide how to line up their characters. This timeline may change depending on the techs or spells used, so make sure to check it out. Once all attacks have been decided, players will want to hit the engage button, which will start the round.
HP, LP, & BP Explained
HP is the character’s health, and like in other games, it decreases as enemies attack. If HP reaches 0 at any point during a battle, the character will be taken out of the fight. However, after a battle is over, their health will automatically return to the maximum.Unfortunately, there is no way to replenish it during a battle.
LP is similar to lives for characters. Each time a character’s HP reaches 0, they lose one LP. After losing all their LP, they won’t be able to participate in any battles. Thankfully, they can be taken out of the combat retinue and regain their LP.Some roles will regain LPafter battles, making it impossible for them to lose all their LP.
BP is the number of stars the characters have in combat. Those stars represent the number of attacks the characters can make, and each attack costs BP. Therefore, one attack may cost 3 BP while another only costs 1. Players will want to minimize the amount of BP they use per character, so all characters can attack.BP will be restored at the beginning of the next turn.
What Are United Attacks, Overdrive, And Showstoppers?
United Attacks occur when the characters are able to usecombostogether to create an attack that goes all at once. This happens when the combo ranges of their attacks all line up together. However, if an attack doesn’t fit into the United Attack, it will stop.
Overdrive is when a few characters get together and doa second United Attackafter the first one ends. If the group’s combo rate reaches 150%, there is a chance of Overdrive, and it is guaranteed once the group reaches 200%.
Showstoppers are when singular characters completea United Attack by themselves. In order for this to happen, there need to be two empty spaces on either side of the character on the timeline. The characters will then use their techs and spells to complete the United Attack alone.
