Rustis, first and foremost, a survival game. While players will eventually have to worry about stocking up on weapons andfacing otherRustplayers in raids, they should remember that the first enemy they need to deal with is mother nature herself.
The environmental dangers thatRustpresents are numerous, from active threats like wildlife to passive threats like weather and radiation. There is craftable equipment to lessen these dangers, such as clothes, tarps, sleeping bags, and hazmat suits, but most of them require cloth to craft.

Finding cloth can be a bit confusing at first, however. Unlike real life, players don’t craft cloth from other items. Instead,Rusttreats cloth almost like a natural resource.
Getting Cloth from Hemp Fibers
It takes a while to climbRust’s tech tree and reach military equipment. Like most real-life civilizations, players should invest their early game with gathering and farming.
A safe way to get cloth is by harvesting hemp fibers. Players will find these triangular plants throughout the map, but a consistent spawn point is the river going through G9 and H9 on the map. Each plant will give the player 2 to 10 cloth, based on how developed the plant was, as well as one hemp seed.
Once the player has collected enough seeds, they can easily make a hemp farm, either using the ground near their base or by crafting planter boxes. They should note that indoor farms need to be manually watered with buckets.
Getting Cloth from Wildlife
Once the player has gotten their hand onsome ofRust’s weapons, whether it be a simple axe or a gun, players can start consistently getting cloth from wildlife. After killing an animal, they can harvest resources from it by using either a rock or a hatchet, with the latter being more efficient.
This method is slower than the hemp fiber method when it comes to gathering cloth alone. That being said, players will also be getting resources like bone fragments, leather, and animal fat. Hunting can be a way of catching multiple birds with one stone.
Getting Cloth from The Recyclers
Players might find objects called recyclers near warehouses and other structures throughout the map. These can be used to revert certain items into their component ingredients. In this case, a recycler can turn a rope into 15 units of cloth and a tarp into 50 units. That being said, this method should be a last resort, as the other methods don’t require sacrificing valuable items.
