RPG Time: The Legend of Wrightis one of the most clever RPGs in quite some time. Certainly, it will stand out at the end of 2022 if enough outreach is given to it. The unfortunate side of its release was that March was filled to the brim with giant games. It was buried.

Let’s not forget that everyone was still inElden Ringfever as well. RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is a pen and paper RPG a kid made in the schoolyard. Players are his friend who decides to play the game with him. Games like these need more boosting so let’s dive into a spoiler-free discussion on whythis indie RPGshould not be missed.
8The Art Style
There is nothing quite likeRPG Time: The Legend of Wrighton the market. It is a blend of real-world objects, paper cutouts, and hand-drawn pencil doodles inside a notebook. There are more surprises too but saying anything more would be a spoiler.
The details are so expertly crafted that it’s not hard to believe someone couldmake an RPGlike this work in reality. The only thing that would be impossible is the fluid animations which is why fans should be thankful they get to play this as a game.
7The HUD
The HUD inRPG Time: The Legend of Wrightdeserves its own set of praise aside from the overall graphic design. It’s hard to get a HUD right in a game. The goal is seemingly to make a HUD look unique from anything else out there and also not be obtrusive. It works for this game. Health is indicated by a tape measure. Whenever life is taken away, the tape measure shrinks.
The character, including his portrait, equipment, and stats, is made out of beads. There are even overlays that pop up for mini-games like one that involves a tank. It is an ever-evolving HUD that always looks fun.
6The Multiple RPG Styles
RPG Time: The Legend of Wrightis pulling hard from theDragon Questseries. The cute enemy designs, the hero sprite, and the music all appear to be homagesto that series.

That may make players think this is strictly a turn-based RPG but it’s more than that. Sometimes players will use their pencil sword to slash enemies in this classic style. Other times they will pummel foes like in an action RPG. There is a lot of variety and it goes beyond the RPG mechanics too.
5Every Page Is Littered With Secrets
Every page in this notebook is littered with tiny secrets. There is a side quest that eventually unlocks which tasks players withfinding a ninja. He’s hard to see but trained eyes will eventually adapt to finding him faster. Doing so will be worth it in the end.
Besides that side quest that persists throughout the adventure, there are smaller ones presented on each page. The detail is stunning.RPG Time: The Legend of Wrightis kind of like an RPG version of Where’s Waldo.
4The Mini-Games
The overall structure of this game may be an RPG, as the name strongly hints, but there is more to it. Besides offering two differentstyles of RPG combat, action and turn-based, there are more elaborate gameplay diversions.
There is an early section of the game that has players drive a tank. This turnsRPG Time: The Legend of Wrightinto what looks like aGame Boyaction game. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. This game will certainly keep players on their toes as far as gameplay goes.
3It’s An Adventure Game Too
RPG Time: The Legend of Wrightcould also be categorized as an adventure game. Players are not going to tear through pages easily. There is a puzzle on each page and figuring out what to do may require some thought. Players may need to figure out where to dig to find a secret entrance or conduct the most efficient way to collect worms for a local shop of mole people.

There are plenty ofaction sequences in RPGand non-RPG formats. However, the puzzle-like nature of each page helps keep the game from feeling monotonous. The pacing deserves praise.
2The Choice System
Every once in a whileRPG Time: The Legend of Wrightwill present players with a choice. These choices aren’t going to change the game in any significant way. There is no need to sweat on these choices like in a more epic RPGwhere dialogue choicescould affect your fate.
These range from quizzes to test player knowledge to deciding what kind of ladder players wish to go up. That latter question is one of the earliest choices in the game. If players choose the cute option then they get to climb an adorable mountain of stuffed animals. The choices offer fun ways to engage the player more without stressing them out.
1Game Over
No one wants to die in a game. WhileRPG Time: The Legend of Wrightis not extremely hard, players are surely going to die. It’s a fact. However, death is even a fun part of this game. How players will revive their hero changes between deaths. Sometimes they need to slap him awake.
Sometimes they need to use electroshock therapy on him. And then sometimes all they need is a bucket of water. The loading between these mini-games could be faster but that’s a small complaint in an otherwise delightful mini-game.
RPG Time: The Legend Of Wrightwas released on May 31, 2025, and is available onPC,Xbox One, andXbox Series X.
