For many fans, one of the most interesting things about watching theRings of PowerAmazon series has been trying to link up the storyline with the movie adaptations of theHobbitand theLord of the Rings. Viewers have been attempting to tie together the storylines that happen over a thousand years apart. There are several familiar characters that appear across the span of all three films, like Elrond and Galadriel.
However, there are also many characters in theRings of Powerwhose identities in the later narratives are yet to be revealed. For example, fans are curious whether theman in the meteor is Gandalf, and whether the dark elf Adar is actually Sauron. But another character has caught the attention of the audience: Halbrand. Several theories have arisen over whether he may become the Witch King of Angmar, The King of the Dead, or the Mouth of Sauron,.

Galadriel clearly has high hopes for Halbrand, and believes that he may be the savior who can reunite the scattered and divided peoples of the Southlands. The audience knows that this is possible. When a long-hidden king returns to claim his throne, it can create an era of peace and prosperity among Middle Earth, just as Aragorn did in the Third Age. Butis Halbrand up to the task? Or will his character take on a darker and more tragic future? There have already been hints towards Halbrand’s more unsavory character. For example, he abandons his ship-mates in the wreckage of the sea serpent; he steals the blacksmith’s badge and gets into street-fights. But does this lack of honor point towards an evil future for the character?
The first of the three possibilities, the Witch King of Angmar, is a fascinating concept, because the evil sidekick’s true identity is unknown. It is clear that he is a king, a once-noble ruler who wascorrupted by a Ring of Poweralongside the other eight men who later became ring wraiths. It is believed that some time after Sauron’s defeat at the Battle of the Last Alliance in the Second Age, the Witch-king flew to the North. There, he created the kingdom of Angmar to strengthen Sauron’s hold upon the lands and help him begin to return to strength after suffering such a blow.
In this way, it is plausible that Halbrand could become the Witch-king, and later found Angmar, if he were twisted and corrupted by the wrong person. Unfortunately, his people in the South are known for having sided with the enemy long ago. If he were tricked with a Ring of Power and offered the chance of dominion alongside the evil lord, there’s no telling whether he would give in to the temptation.
The same can be said for Halbrand becoming the Mouth of Sauron. This is another character about whom very little is written. Once again, no one knows his true name, not even he himself. He is said to have lost his name somewhere in the thousand years of his servitude to Sauron.
Unlike the Witch-King, who has become spectral, the Mouth of Sauron is still human, but has been imbued with immortality by the poisonous magic of the dark lord. As his emissary, the Mouth has to be incredibly diplomatic, and able to negotiate the strictest of terms for his master. This is a skill that the audience has already seen Halbrand use several times, for example whenmediating between Miriel and Galadrielbefore they become allies. If Halbrand comes across the dagger that Theo is smuggling deep in the Southlands, and becomes tainted by its power, then he may just end up on the wrong side of the war, despite his current alliance with the golden she-elf.
Finally, the other possibility is that Halbrand may be both an enemy and a friend, if he becomes the King of the Dead. This king was a man who led his people in favor of Sauron, until they were persuaded to swear an oath to Isildur, the King of Gondor. However, when it came to the final battle, they never showed. Isildur cursed them uponthe stone of Erech, a binding magical rock where the allegiance originally took place. The king and his soldiers were therefore bound to live eternally as spirits until they completed their promise to serve the king of Gondor, which they later did with Aragorn in the Third Age.
There already seems to be a connection forming between Halbrand and Elendil, Isildur’s father, through Galadriel herself. Perhaps Halbrand will swear fealty to the son, and become the famous green ghost living beneath the mountains
