A retro gamer has released a video where they manage to get Windows 98 running on theirXbox Series Sconsole. The operating system has actually appeared on Microsoft’s newest consoles before, after one gamer also portedWindows 98 to the Xbox Series X.
TheXbox Series Shas been an enormous success for Microsoft since it was first released in 2020. With the availability of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X limited during the first few years of their lifespans, many gamers turned to the Xbox Series S as a cheaper alternative to get their fix of next-gen games. The console being so easily accessible for gamers has been a key selling point for the Xbox Series S, and it’s certainly no slouch when it comes to performance, either. Combined with the affordability of Xbox Game Pass, it makes the Xbox Series S a force to be reckoned with on the console market.

The project was completed by YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer, and turns the Xbox Series S into a retro gaming PC, complete with Windows 98. Modern Vintage Gamer manages to complete the project by emulating Windows 98 through the Xbox Series S' ability to run community-developed apps on the console. In the video, he briefly shows footage of the Xbox Series S runningclassic PC titles likeHalf-LifeandUnreal, with some performance benchmarks showing crazy results. He even tops it off by connecting an old CRT monitor to the console, which is sure to evoke nostalgia in many players.
With the passage of time, gamers' fascination with retro games grows as they become less and less accessible. It’s good that these exploits exist to allow players to turn back time on modern hardware, as it’s a good way to preserve older titles that could get lost over time. They make it easier to forgive aged mechanics, which many remasters don’t tackle. Playing a game that’s received a fresh coat of paint, but still plays like a game from the 1990s can be jarring.
