Matildais a machine pistol first introduced in the originalResident Evil 4. Back in 2005, it was an unlockable weapon Leon could buy only after beating the campaign. Its name was a nod to the deuteragonist ofLeon: The Professional, Mathilda. And it was the only burst-fire type handgun in the game. In theRE4remake, however, Matilda is available from the very first playthrough, though it gets the burst-fire upgrade later. If that sounds confusing, use this guide toget Matilda quicklyand see if it’s worth the investment.

How to Get Matilda in RE4
As a tradable weapon in theRE4remake,Matilda is only available at Merchant sites. To get this handgun, the player mustprogress the campaign to Chapter 8 and purchase it for 10 Spinels. After the initial acquisition, the player can repurchase it for 20,000 Pesetas from the Merchant.
Likethe Punisher, Matilda is also a Spinel-exclusive handgun. Spinel is a scarce currency in theResident Evil 4remake, mainly obtained bycompleting the Merchant Requests.
How to Get the Matilda Stock
The stock turns Matilda into a machine pistol that fires three rounds per shot. Besides that, the Matilda Stock also improves Matilda’s precision, increasing it from 3.50 to 4.50. Toget thisRE4attachment, the player will need topay 12 Spinels to the Merchant of Chapter 11.
Matilda Stats and Upgrades
Matilda’s base stats are 1.3 power, 18 ammo capacity, 1 reload speed, and 0.96 rate of fire. However, at level 5, its power becomes 2.00, its capacity increases to 60 (plus one in the chamber), its reload speed goes up to 1.4, and its rate of fire reaches 1.63.
Of course, getting Matilda to level 5 won’t be easy. To fully upgrade this machine pistol, the player must pay 368,000 Pesetas: 146,000 for power upgrades, 52,000 for capacity, 38,000 for reload speed, 62,000 for fire rate, and an additional 70,000 to unlockits Exclusive Perk.

Matilda’s Exclusive Perk doubles its max capacity, letting it carry 60 bullets per magazine. But since this gun has the “one in the chamber” perk, it can actually have 61 ready-to-fire shots.
Is Matilda Worth It?
Although an excellent crowd-controlling handgun,Matilda is not worth it in the first playthrough. The only thing that makes this gun unique is its burst-fire perk, which makes it an SMG-like pistol. But the player is better off without spending 22 Spinels on getting Matilda, whileSMGs like LE5 come for free.
TheResident Evil 4remake is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
