Summary
Red Dead Redemption 2is lauded across the board for its invigorating story, dynamic open-world, and lifelike NPCs, all of which contribute tothe immersion in the game. The NPCs in particular are absolutely full of character, thanks to both great writing and voice acting, but also the way in which they interact with the world.
Practically every NPC in the game has a daily schedule and life, and just as is the case with the real world, there is a wide array of personalities. The best NPCs inRed Dead Redemption 2, are memorable and instantly captivating, surprising players in all kinds of ways.
7Mickey
One of the most memorable NPCs inRed Dead Redemption 2who most players will run into, is Mickey, an alleged former soldier in the U.S. Army who has since become homeless and has to beg in Valentine. Every passerby seemingly ignores Mickey and refuses to give him any money, but the small acts of kindness the protagonist can offer mean the world to him.
One of the moreemotional moments inRed Dead Redemption 2comes later in the game when it becomes Mickey’s turn to comfort Arthur.
6Charlotte Balfour
One of the best things about Rockstar’s masterpiece is that the characters feel alive and the choices players make will have real effects on them. Charlotte Balfour is an NPC in the game who has been recently widowed and is naturally struggling.
By giving hertips on how to hunt, showing her how to shoot a gun, and just giving her their time, players can inject some happiness back into Charlotte’s heart and get her back on her feet. Once she is in a better place, players will see just how kind and grateful she is.
5Charles Chatenay
WhileRed Dead Redemption 2features manypowerful Arthur Morgan quotes, a lot of the humorous dialogue comes from minor NPCs. One particular charming and affluent individual with hilarious lines, is Charles Chatenay, a French artist based in Saint Denis.
Players can have plenty of interactions with Charles as part ofThe Artist’s Waymission where his extravagance and self-deprecating humor are at their finest. Charles can be first found in Doyle’s Tavern, and by talking to him, they will set the swings in motion.
4Albert Mason
While most NPCs in games are usually found in urban areas, Albert Mason is a lovable wildlife photographer in the making whom Arthur will come across in the wild. Albert is clumsy and uncertain of himself, but as showcased by the photographs he produces, he certainly has talent.
If this doesn’t endear him to players, then his love for allanimals in the gameand disdain for hunters certainly will, as players will discover if they happen to skin an animal in his presence. Albert Mason can be found in multiple locations across the map and has his own side missionArcadia for Amateurs, and by taking part in this he can become one of Arthur’s few real friends.
3Lillian Powell
Saint Denis is arguablythe best settlement inRed Dead Redemption 2, and for better or worse it is home to many personalities, some of whom are integral to the story and others who are just their living their lives. One such NPC is the self-professed town drunk, Lillian Powell, who claims to have once been quite well-known.
In the game, she is one of the guests who attend the Mayor’s party, and she can also be found in the Bastille Saloon where players will frequently hear her demanding alcohol and cocaine. She has some of the best quotes in the game.
2Nigel
If players have ever heard a lost English voice pining for their friend Gavin, then this is the hilarious NPC Nigel. Found in multiple locations across the map, Nigel is wandering around in desperate search of his dear friend and traveling companion Gavin who has gone missing. He has many great lines and players won’t know whether to laugh or feel sad for him.
One of the many smallEaster eggs that players may have missed inRed Dead Redemption 2, is a letter to Nigel from another of his friends back in England. It turns out that Nigel in his own correspondence home wasn’t quite honest about his struggles across the pond, leading his family and friends to believe that he and Gavin had become hugely successful cowboys.
1Margaret
Margaret is easily one of the most eccentric characters inRed Dead Redemption 2, and he also happens to initiate one ofthe best side quests in the game,He’s British, of Course. This mission involves tracking down a zebra, tiger, and lion, all of which Margaret has lost on the way to his next performance.
With a cracking English accent punctuated by incessant swearing, a strained relationship with his father, and a demeanor well suited to the stages he performs on, Margaret will have players in fits of laughter and make them wish he was more than just a minor NPC. Margaret can be found next to his broken wagons and trailers in Scarlett Meadows, Lemoyne.
Red Dead Redemption 2is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
