Regional forms have existed in thePokemonworld since Gen 7’sPokemon Sun/Moon, and the numbers of these variants have increased with each new generation. Although it did not debut inSword/Shield, Ursaluna was added in the Hisui region ofPokemon Legends: Arceusas a third evolution for Teddiursa and Ursaring. Another generation later, Ursaluna had gained a new form inPokemon Scarlet & Violetcalled Bloodmoon Ursaluna.

Trainers who’ve purchased the expansion pack forScarlet/Violethave a chance of obtaining their own Bloodmoon Ursaluna in a side quest exclusive toThe Teal Mask. Since the Gen 9 mainline games now have compatibility withPokemon HOME, they can also have a regular/Hisuian Ursaluna. It’s not uncommon for Pokemon with regional variants/forms to have different stat spreads and completely different learnsets. Thus, some players may be wondering if the Hisuian Ursaluna pales in comparison to the Bloodmoon Ursaluna of Kitakami. Both Ursalunas have their pros and cons, so before making room for them in the party, it’s best to know what sets them apart.

How to Get Ursaluna in Scarlet/Violet

Players won’t be able to get Ursaluna in Paldea or Kitakami, so they’ll need tocatch one inLegends: ArceusorPokemon GO. Then, they’ll need to transfer it toScarlet/Violetby usingPokemon HOME.

Legends: Arceus

Teddiursa and Ursaring can both be caught in theCrimson Mirelands (Ursa’s Ring)andCoronet Highlands (Sonorous Path)inLegends: Arceus. The Crimson Mirelands is the second area that players will unlock while Coronet Highlands is the fourth. If players aren’t that high a level yet, then it’s recommended to get the Teddiursa at Ursa’s Ring.Bring items that can stun, such as Mud Balls or Sticky Globs. Teddiursa are normally skittish, but if there’s an Ursaring nearby, they’ll alert it of the player’s presence.

To get Ursaluna, players will need to find aPeat Blockand use it on their Ursaringduring a full moon. Peat Blocks can be found by using the Ride Ursaluna to dig up treasure, or it can be found in space-time distortions. Players can also buy one from Ginter at Jubilife Village, but this method is unreliable as his wares change every day. As for a full moon, trainers will just need to keep “Wait/Rest until night” and rely on RNG.

To transfer Ursaluna fromLegends: Arceus, do the following:

Pokemon GO

InPokemon GO, trainers can catch a wild Teddiursa and evolve it using Teddiursa Candy. Once evolved into Ursaring, it will need100 Teddirusa Candyto evolveonly during a full moon in real time. If attempted to evolve on any other night, the Evolve option will be grayed out.

To transfer Ursaluna fromPokemon GO, do the following:

How to Get Bloodmoon Ursaluna

To get Bloodmoon Ursaluna (without trading), trainers will need theScarlet/Violetexpansion pass. Once they have this, they can go toKitakamiafter they’ve started the Treasure Hunt. InMossui Town, there’s a photographer named Perrinand her Hisuian Growlithe. Speak to her, and she’ll want trainers toregister 150 Pokemon in the Kitakami Dex. After this, players will get the chance to battle her level 68-70 Pokemon: Noctowl and Leafeon.

The levels of Perrin’s party does not scale with the player. Her team will always be at level 68 and level 70. Thus, it’s best to attempt the side quest in the lategame ofScarlet/Violet.

After Perrin’s defeat, she’ll recruit the trainer character to look for the Bloodmoon Ursaluna in theTimeless Woods. There’s a “minigame” where trainers will need to take pictures of 10 different Pokemon in the Timeless Woods before they can have a chance at battling/catching Bloodmoon Ursaluna.

Like the Titan Pokemon, Bloodmoon Ursaluna has a lot of HP and it’s a level 70 Pokemon. Trainers are advised to bring Water-type or Fighting-type Pokemon to target its type weakness. Don’t hesitate to terastallize either.Once Bloodmoon Ursaluna’s HP drops to zero, trainers can throw a Poke Ball for an automatic catch.

Ursaluna vs Bloodmoon Ursaluna: Which is Better?

Not only do Ursaluna and Bloodmoon Ursaluna have some physical differences, but they also have different base stat spreads and learnsets. Since regular/Hisuian Ursaluna is inScarlet/Violet, it has access to Abilities. Here’s what to know about the Ursalunas:

Ursaluna has a great HP base stat, and Bloodmoon Ursaluna’s isn’t bad either. The differences in their base stats are mostly their Attack and Special Attack. Ursaluna has a high 140 Attack while Bloodmoon Ursaluna only has 70. This is reflected in their learnsets, where Ursaluna’s moves are mostly physical, and Bloodmoon’shas more special moves. For example, at level 48, Ursaluna learnsHigh Horsepower(physical), but Bloodmoon Ursaluna learnsEarth Power(special).

They both have good Defense with Bloodmoon Ursaluna 15 base stat points higher. Unfortunately, its Special Defense is its second-to-worst stat; Ursaluna’s Special Defense not very outstanding either.

There’s not much difference in their Speed, although Bloodmoon is a little bit faster. Thus, their turn is likely to be last in battle.

In short: Bloodmoon Ursaluna is the betterspecial attacker; regular/Hisuian Ursaluna is aphysical attacker. They make decent walls against physical moves, but do poorly against special attacks.

Bloodmoon Ursaluna

Ability 1:

Guts: Attack is raised by 50% if inflicted with a status condition. If burned, its Attack won’t be cut in half.

Mind’s Eye: Can hit Ghost-type Pokemon with Normal and Fighting-type moves. Also bypasses the opponent’s evasiveness and cannot have its accuracy lowered.

Ability 2:

Bulletproof: Protects Ursaluna from Bomb and Ball moves (ex: Energy Ball, Pollen Puff)

Unnerve: Prevents the opposing Pokemon from eating (Held) Berries.

N/A

Both Ursalunas have the same type effectiveness, but their Abilities can make or break them for some trainers. Ursaluna has Guts or Bulletproof as their two main Abilities with Unnerve as their Hidden. All three Abilities are situational, but having an Ursaluna with Guts has better benefits and is less dependent on the opponent’s moveset than Bulletproof. Unfortunately,Unnerve isn’t that great of a Hidden Ability, so it’s not worth using an Ability Patch on Ursaluna.

Bloodmoon Ursaluna only has one Ability: Mind’s Eye. This essentially combines two Abilities into one, as it has the same effects as Scrappy and Keen Eye. When it comes to Abilities, Bloodmoon Ursaluna has the better deal despite not having a Hidden or second Ability.

What determineswhether to use Ursaluna or Bloodmoon Ursalunaare the trainers themselves. Both are great for combating Electric-type Pokemon, and they have two immunities (ie: Electric and Ghost). They also have coverage moves in their learnset such as Play Rough (Ursaluna) and Moonblast (Bloodmoon). If trainers want a physical attacking Pokemon, then they should choose Ursaluna. If they want a special attacking Pokemon, then they’ll want Bloodmoon Ursaluna.
