Summary
Despite the rocky launch thatPokemon Scarlet and Violethad due to the many performance issues and glitches experienced by players, Gen 9 games were groundbreaking in multiple ways, be it in the context of past games or what to expect from future ones. With a lot of innovation brought to the franchise by the first-ever fully open-worldPokemongames as well asPokemon Scarlet and Violetbreaking many longstanding traditions, there’s a lot riding on Gen 10’s shoulders - whenever those titles may end up releasing. Still, Gen 9 had its flaws and quirks, and an interesting choice on Game Freak’s part was to give one specific type special attention both in the base game and the upcoming The Teal Mask DLC.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Indigo Diskwill add a nineteenth type to the chart, and although it seems to only be tied to Terastallization, it could be enough to bring about an all-new type in Gen 10. Furthermore, both DLC expansions will include a fair share of new and returning critters for trainers to catch, even though multiple of the exclusive new ones are shrouded in mystery to this day, including their official type combinations. Yet, one type was the most represented in the base game for Gen 9, and The Teal Mask is doubling down on it by adding even more critters to its ever-expanding roster.

How Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Favor Grass-Type Pokemon
Boasting a whopping total of 104 new critters in the Paldean Pokedex, with the total increasing to 106 with the addition ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Walking Wake and Iron Leavesvia Tera Raid battles, Gen 9 was one of the most prolific among modern entries in the series. The type distribution among Paldean Pokemon was not as balanced as other generations, however, with some types only getting a handful of critters representing them and others having plenty.
Among them is Grass, which is the most represented type in the base game, with a total of 15 new Pokemon sharing this type compared to the second most represented being Dark, with 13 critters. Not only that, butPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s The Teal Mask DLC will be adding at least two new Grass-type Pokemon in the form of Applin and Poltchageist, with a chance of this number being doubled with Poltchageist’s evolution and Ogerpon. It’s still unclear whatOgerpon’s typing inPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill be, but there’s reason to believe it will at least have a Grass-type Tera form, assuming the critter is not already a Grass-type from the get-go.
As such, not considering possible new Grass Pokemon from The Indigo Disk DLC for Gen 9 games, Grass will be the most represented type in Paldea by a huge margin, especially considering that there don’t seem to be new Dark-type creatures according to leaks. As it stands, theGrass-type PokemoninScarlet and Violet(including those announced for the DLC) are:
This number could even grow from the current total of 17 to 19 or more when both DLC expansions are released, and it shows that Game Freak has been giving Grass-type pocket monsters a lot of attention lately.Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Poltchageist, combined with Bramblin and Brambleghast, enriches the current selection of Grass/Ghost critters, whereas Meowscarada, Brute Boonet, and Wo-Chien all share Dark as their secondary type. Overall, it’s an interesting choice to dedicate so many Pokemon to a single type in Gen 9, and it poses the question as to what future generations will bring - both thematically and in terms of new creatures.
