Summary

A skilledPokemon GOplayer managed to catch a shiny Pokemon using a flip phone. Catching a shiny Pokemon inPokemon GOis already considered impressive, but to catch one using a flip phone is unheard of.

Shiny Pokemon inPokemon GOare extremely rare to find in the game, with the shiny rate for some of them being a 1.6% chance of spawning in the wild. Players can recognize a shiny Pokemon by the color variation, as a shiny will have a different hue than they normally would, or in some cases, a brand new color scheme altogether. For example, a shiny Charmander will have a more yellow tint than its traditional red. Not every Pokemon in the game has a shiny version, but many of them do, including all 151 original Pokemon from the Kanto region of generation one.

Not only did Reddit user 15pmm01 manage to find ashiny Pokemon inPokemon GO, but they managed to catch it using a flip phone. In the first image posted to Reddit, a shiny Gyarados is seen displayed on an old-school-looking flip phone. Gyarados are usually blue, so a red one indicates that it’s shiny. The next two images show proof that the player caught the Pokemon, with the second image showing the date June 27, 2025. 5pmm01 also explained that this shiny Gyarados was a reward after completing a raid.

As impressive as it is for someone tocompete in a raid inPokemon GOand catch a shiny with a flip phone, it should be noted that this was not a device made 15 years ago. According to 15pmm01, the phone is the Cat S22 Flip, and it came out two years ago. The phone may look like one of the first cell phones ever made, but it’s a more modern flip phone with a touchscreen. The phone itself can run most Android apps, but the original poster was still surprised that it could runPokemon GO, as the phone can have trouble with resource-intensive apps.

In the comments, most fans congratulated the original poster on their flip phone shiny catch, with one commenter hoping for a trend to start wherePokemon GOis played on even more ridiculous devices. A true test for this flip phone is to see if it can handle some of thehardest Pokemon to catch inPokemon GO, like Lugia, Ho-Oh, or Palkia.

Pokemon GOis available for iOS and Android.
