Summary

Pokemon GOis currently in the middle of its World of Wonders season, and there are a ton of opportunities for players to experience new in-game content like new critters, events, and gameplay mechanics. However, not all the recent additions toPokemon GOduring the World of Wonders seasons have been winners, and some fans have taken issue with the new PokeCoin Field Research. The disappointment with this new Field Research demonstrates the limits ofPokemon GO’s live-service model, which will hopefully allow Niantic to correct the game’s course in the future.

Pokemon GOhas faced mounting controversy from fans after itsRediscover Yourself update to the game’s avatar systemwas poorly received by players, and the rewards offered in the Rediscover Kanto update’s Field Research left many players underwhelmed. Following a similar trend, players are now taking issue with the value behind the new paid PokeCoin Field Research, which many feel is not worth the price or effort. While the upcoming Catching Wonders event will be offering players the chance to gain a third Master Ball, the string of recent controversies has turned manyPokemon GOplayers off from the game.

Pokemon GO Players Are Unhappy with the New PokeCoin Field Research

The PokeCoinField Researchticket launched inPokemon GOon May 8 and is available until May 16 when the ticket goes live. Players who purchase the ticket have the chance to earn up to 300 PokeCoins between May 16 and May 30, but there is a catch. The ticket costs $1.99 or the local currency equivalent, but it requires players to complete daily tasks every day to earn 20 coins per day for a total of 300 PokeCoins once the ticket ends, meaning players will need to make sure they log in and complete these tasks every day to ensure they earn the full value of the ticket.

PokeCoins arePokemon GO’s premium currencyand are a valuable resource to have since they allow players to purchase items like Remote Raid Passes, Poke Balls, and additional Item Bag and Pokemon Storage Space. Typically, players are prompted to purchase PokeCoins from the in-game shop outright without having to jump through the hoops of completing tasks on a ticket. However, with the minimum number of PokeCoins purchasable being 100 for $0.99, getting three times the number of PokeCoins for only double that price is a good deal in theory.

Why Pokemon GO’s PokeCoin Field Research is Disappointing

Despite technically being a good deal on paper, manyPokemon GOplayersare struggling to see the value of this PokeCoin Field Research ticket. The main problem with this ticket is the fact that it requires players to complete daily tasks in order to earn the coins they paid for, making the additional 100-coin value not necessarily worth the effort of committing to playing the game daily. This ticket runs into the same problems that many live-service games face with their battle passes locking content players have paid for behind needing to commit a certain amount of play time to the game.

Most criticism ofPokemon GO’s PokeCoin Field Research ticket comes down to its ultimately useless nature. Most players would likely prefer topurchase the number of PokeCoinsthey need right then and there rather than commit to completing in-game tasks every day across a two-week period just to earn an extra 100 coins. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s also likely that failing to complete a task one day during the period the ticket is live will prevent players from obtaining that day’s coin payout, potentially preventing players from earning the full value of the PokeCoin Field Research ticket they paid for.
