Summary

A talentedPokemonfan has created an impressive painting of the classic Pokemon starter, Squirtle, in a Japanese ink style. Well-executed and in a rather unique art style not often seen in the seemingly endless sea ofPokemonfan art, the handcrafted painting’s esthetics seem to be making a strong impression upon the franchise’s online fan community.

Easily one of the most recognizable Pokemon of all time, Squirtle is a Water-type introduced as part of the very first generation of Pokemon, which eventually evolves into the powerful Blastoise. One of Ash’s primary Pokemon in the earlier days of the anime, the series' most memorable moment involving the Pokemon came withthe iconic Squirtle Squad, a gang of sunglasses-wearing delinquent Squirtles which made their triumphant return earlier this year. While the squad has a slightly different appearance than other Squirtles, the fan’s ink painting is an entirely different art style.

The impressive painter in question is Reddit user ZanorinSeregris, who posted their majestic artwork to one of the site’s mainPokemonforums. Done in a bit more of a grounded form, the painting depicts Squirtle in what looks to be a swimming position, flanked by a few bubbles on either side. The black outline work itself varies in size and thickness, adding plenty of visual interest throughout the painting’s details. The artist also appears to utilize watercolor paints, which aren’t only fitting given the Pokemon’s typing, but is also evocative ofPokemonartist Ken Sugimori’s original paintings.

PerceptitvePokemonfans will notice the Japanese ink painting is labeled as the 42nd from the artist. ZanorinSeregris seems to have made a name for themselves paintingPokemonin this unique style, creating works of creatures like Luxray, Gengar, Tyranitar, Red Gyarados, and much more. The painter’s most recent work wasa painting of Eelektross and Tynamo, which features the large Eelektross with a handful of its first form surrounding it, along with another few bubbles. While the artist paints a variety of Pokemon, they seem to have a penchant for Water-types.

The sophisticated painting certainly appears to be making a strong impression upon many aPokemonfan, but it isn’t the only elegant fan-made craft to have recently come out of the community. Earlier this year, another fan made headlines for their impressivelife-sized stained-glass Squirtle statue. The incredible fan creation is freestanding as well as color-accurate, making it look like a professionally-produced product. The polygonal, geometric Squirtle is a far cry in style from the line-flowing painting above, displaying the incredibly wide variety of artPokemonfans can create.
