When Microsoft announced that the popularPhantasy Star Online2would receive a Western releaseon both Xbox One and PC, fans were glad to hear the surprising news. However, players who were looking forward to the closed beta tests were disappointed to find the servers struggling to keep up with eager testers.
In a Reddit post expressing disappointment about the inability to play thePhantasy Star Online 2beta, several users shared their experiences so far. While some players dealt with severe lag and multiple disconnects in the middle of gameplay, others were not even able to connect to the servers.

Several Reddit users complained that Sega had only opened one server, and that the other “ships” were inaccessible. While Reddit user Aadrian1234 thought that Sega’s actions were meant to “stress test” the server’s capabilities, others noted that there were scheduled in-game events and exclusive loot available during the congestion problems and that it wouldn’t make sense to try such a test during this time. Other players simply accused the developer of not caring about andneglecting its North American players. However, many reached the agreement that the beta’s performance would not bode well for the game’s full launch.
Although the beta’s server issues might rightfully concern avid fans of the game, they might not need to worry.Phantasy Star Online 2’s initial releasewas in 2012, and the game has had continued support since its debut. Although there are currently congestion issues, Sega may have merely underestimated the amount of interest in the game and failed to allocate the necessary amount of server power. Moreover, because the game is being developed for multiple platforms beyond the Xbox One and PC, the developer will inevitably be sure to patch these issues in order to ensure less problems with future porting.
Despite current technical issues, players can still attempt tojoin thePhantasy Star Online 2closed beta, which will end on February 8th at 11:59 pm, PST. Hopefully, if Sega manages to resolve the beta’s congestion in time, players will be able to experience the nostalgia the game has to offer. However, even if the beta ultimately proves to be unsuccessful, Sega promises to have the full game released on “all” platforms very soon.
Phantasy Star Online 2is in development for “all platforms” and releases, in the west, in spring 2020 for PC and Xbox One.
