Overwatch 2game director Jeff Kaplan responds to criticism that the new game is just an expensive expansion pack. Blizzard announcedOverwatch 2at BlizzCon 2019 but many fans said that the the gameplay shown could have just been added to the first game as DLC.

Speaking toEdgemagazine (issue 340), Kaplan said that his definition of a sequel is “a brand new game, with new gameplay and features as well as an evolution of the game world.” By Kaplan’s definition,Overwatch 2is “clearly a sequel.” Kaplan also said that asOverwatch 2is “an order of magnitude larger than the original game, and therefore we consider it a sequel.”

The new game will offer a good amount of new gameplay forOverwatchfans. Blizzard has confirmed thatOverwatch 2will have several new heroes, as well as a new player versus player game mode called Push. There will also be new maps, withOverwatch 2fans suggesting that Thailand will be one location in the game. With new designs for old characters and with story missions too, Blizzard will be fixing some of the issues that fans had with the first game.

However, there are manyOverwatchfans who disagree with Kaplan’s definition of a sequel and whetherOverwatch 2can be defined as such. Those who have said thatOverwatch 2is just DLChave said that as the new characters and maps will all be coming to the firstOverwatch, there is no need for a new game.Overwatch 2’s story missions will not be shared with players of the first game, but many have said that these missions aren’t worth the $60 price of a new game.

Blizzard may find success withOverwatch 2, whether fans keep criticizing the game as being expensive DLC or not. Those speaking in defense of the game have also said that games such as theFIFAandMadden NFLseries just add new characters, some new stadia, and change stats each year and they sell millions of copies. In comparison to these games,Overwatch 2is adding much more. There have also been several years betweenOverwatchandOverwatch 2, while these annual sports releases have just 12 months between them.

Kaplan has said that hedoesn’t know whenOverwatch 2will be released. This gives Blizzard more time to get fans to support the game, but it could also leave some to feel that they’ve had their fill of Overwatch gameplay.

Overwatch 2is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
