Last month it was revealed thatNintendo 64and Sega Genesis titles were coming to the Nintendo Switch as a part of the new Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Along with the excitement that classic games from two decades ago would now be a part of Nintendo’s hybrid console, Nintendo also revealedNintendo 64 and Sega Genesis controllers for the Switch. Now, according to the controller’s online listing, a fan-favorite feature is returning.
During today’sAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsdirect, Nintendo revealed theprice and release date of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. That news came with the fact that some paidAnimal Crossing: New Horizons' DLC (a series that started on the Nintendo 64) will be a part of the Expansion Pack as well, upping the value of the product. But as fans flood Nintendo’s website for information on the Nintendo 64 controller, a specific feature was confirmed.

The Nintendo 64 controller for the Switch will come with rumble functionality, no old-school Rumble Pak required. Nintendo’s official listing of the controller notes that rumble will be supported for games that utilized the feature, such asStar Fox 64. The controller is designed to look and feel just like its 1996 counterpart, except now the 1997 Rumble Pak feature is built-in. Additionally, theNintendo 64 controller has new buttons for Switch-specific supportand a USB C port and cable for recharging. The controller will truly be a mix of nostalgia and modern technology.
Nintendo has always been at the forefront of controller innovation. Some mainstay pieces of technology were either created by or widely introduced by Nintendo, such as the shoulder buttons with the SNES controller, the thumbstick with theNintendo 64controller, rumble via the Rumble Pak on the Nintendo 64 controller, etc. Nintendo’s dual and touch screen technology on the Nintendo DS came long before even phones used the idea as a standard feature, and the Wii motion technology helped revolutionize all of gaming. It is exciting to see Nintendo bring back the Nintendo 64 for the Switch in its most powerful form.
The Nintendo 64 controller (which ships on October 25) and the added titles from the Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 are certainly the selling point for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, but other features look to be on the way as well. TheAnimal Crossing: New HorizonsHappy Home Paradise paid DLC also comes free with the Expansion Pack, and it is possible that more DLC and things of that nature will be a part of the pack moving forward. All of this is why theNintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s price may be a bit morethan some anticipated.
