Summary
A sequel toNier: Automatamight have been teased by series creator Yoko Taro at theNierLondon Concert.TheNierfranchisehas been a bit of a breakout hit in the last couple of years, thanks to Yoko Taro’s eccentric and unconventional game design and writing. Despite its recent success in other media forms, like an anime adaptation, novels, and concerts, some fans wonder if there will be a new mainline AAA game set in the same universe, or a direct follow-up toNier: Automata.
Nier: Automata’s creator has been clear about his desire to create a new mainline entry in the series ever since the release ofNier Replicantin 2021. Post-Replicant’s release, however, Taro had been working on a bunch of other smaller projects, such as mobile RPGs, theVoice of Cardsseries, and more. Fortuntely for fans, they may have gotten their first tease of a sequel to the belovedNier: Automata.
This teaser wasshared by ResetEra member SanTheSlyduring a discussion aboutNier: Automatarecently surpassing 8 million units sold. SanTheSly shared an anecdote about how they were in attendance at theNierconcert that took place in London earlier this month, where Yoko Taro and Square Enix president, Takashi Kiryu, were in attendance. SanTheSly claims that as the concert was ending, Taro took to the stage, stating that if fans wanteda sequel toNier: Automata, they should give the loudest applause of the night. Naturally, the room erupted into claps and cheers immediately.
Breaking Down Yoko Taro’s Nier Sequel Tease
As Yoko Taro is known for being a bit of a mellow, if eccentric person, it’s entirely unclear how serious Taro was during the event. Things get a bit muddier, as SanTheSly elaborates that, during the story of the show, the word “REPENT” was shown repeatedly throughout its dialogue. The final instance of its appearance used the unique spelling of “R3PENT,” similar to the formatting ofNier: Automata’s alphabetical endings. SanTheSly and the person they went with wondered if this was a tease about a third mainlineNiergame already being in development.
Square Enix has commented on the possibility of aNier: Automatasequelbefore, with executive producer Yosuke Saito mentioning thatNierwill have a new entry as long as Yoko Taro is alive. That said, Taro and Saito have previously expressed doubt that a new game in the franchise would be able to live up toAutomata’s high commercial sales. While its unclear if Taro was just needling those in attendance or genuinely showing to the top brass how much fans wanted a sequel toNier: Automata, fans now have some hope, though they will need to wait for more information to be provided by either Taro or Square Enix before truly getting excited.
