The new clip shows a teenage Pearl in a movie theater booth, watching a segment of a tawdry 1940s porno film at the urging of an older man. Pearl, who we know from both the previous movie and the trailer for this prequel, is driven to watch by both sexual appetite and afascination with Hollywood fame. She stares wide-eyed through the projection window at a black and white flickering image of a man seducing a woman on camera. The fascination echoes Pearl’s obsession with Maxine and her friends as they shoot their erotic filmThe Farmers DaughtersinXbefore Pearl proceeds to eliminate them one by one.

Clips and the trailer from this origin story exhibit the same attention to period detail as the previous film. WhileXwas a tawdry, blood-soaked celebration of the late ’70s that has been compared toTexas Chainsaw Massacreby some,Pearllooks into the more distant past with a distinct 1940s Hollywood flavor. Goth’s performance, much like her Maxine role in the first film, looks to be on point, exuding both wide-eyed naivete and sinister obsession with both Hollywood and its seedier side.
