Summary
WhenMortal Kombat 1was revealed as the new era for theMortal Kombatfranchise, it wasn’t entirely clear what that meant. AfterMortal Kombat(2011) served as a reboot of the originalMKtrilogy andMKXaretelling ofMortal Kombat 4, it seemed thatMortal Kombat 11was going to be the chance to return to the 3D-era plot. However, this was not the case.MK11ended up going for its own unique story, leaving the hope of a retold 3D-era story in the dust. That is untilMortal Kombat 1.
Many fans were pleasantly surprised to see that the dream of seeing 3D-era characters and plot points return in a modernMortal Kombatgame was not lost forever.Mortal Kombat 1saw the return of the Deadly Alliance, the partnership of two ofMK’s most evil villains, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. While simultaneously serving as a sequel toMK11and a reboot of the entire series,MK1had the opportunity to reinvent characters from all across the series. Luckily for fans of the 3D games, this includes iconic characters from the rosters ofDeadly AllianceandDeceptionas well as from the original trilogy. Though some of the best 3D-era characters were brought back forMK1, there are still many nearly forgotten characters that could do well with a modern refresh.
Mortal Kombat 3D-Era Characters That Deserve A Comeback
Hotaru
Hotaru is one of the originalcharacters fromMortal Kombat: Deceptionwho has the opportunity to be a great character if brought back. He is a general from the order realm of Seido, where the new Havik comes from inMortal Kombat 1. A sworn enemy of chaos, Hotaru will go to any lengths to maintain order, no matter how cold. His rivalry against Havik could be a great opportunity to play into a battle between two extreme sides. Hopefully, futureMKcontent will see Hotaru returning with a fresh look and move set.
Mavado
Originally debuting inMortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mavado also appeared as a cameo inDeceptionandMKX. He is a member of the red dragon clan who is opposed to Kano’s black dragon clan. Mavado is a character that has the opportunity to be flushed out more and perhaps serve as an interesting new ally to the traditionalMKheroes. His fighting style is unique too, and could offer some cool gameplay opportunities infutureMKcontent.
Taven
Introduced as the protagonist inMortal Kombat: ArmageddonKonquest, was Taven, son of Argus. Taven is a half-god warrior of Edenia with what might be the ultimate early-2000s look. His entire role is to fight to stop the end of the world along with his brother Daegon. Although he was an important character in the game, Taven didn’t receive too much in the way of character development. Taven has the potential to be an iconic character if given an update for a modern game.
Meat
Among the list of mostlyforgottenMKcharacters, Meat is unique. He is one of the characters who started as a secret, glitch, rumor, or bonus fight. Much like:
Meat’s first appearance inMK4was as a model glitch where players could “unlock” the character by defeating every character in Vs. Mode. Since his model was originally just the bloody remains of previous characters, he didn’t have any unique story or moves. But as Ermac started in a similarly mysterious way and went on to become a fully-fledged character, so can Meat.
