Summary

SomeMortal Kombat 1players have been avoiding paying for skins that were previously available during Season 1 of the Invasions mode by changing the date of their consoles.Mortal Kombat 1is one of the best fighting games of 2023, but its aggressive monetization practices have infuriated many gamers who are finding clever methods to circumvent it.

The first season ofMortal Kombat 1’s Invasions modeallowed players to purchase unique skins using Dragon Krystals,MK1’s in-game currency. NetherRealm Studios originally promised that these skins would not be available outside of the season, but then decided to sell them for real money. This sparked a huge backlash from the community, as selling items that could be previously obtained by just playing the game was seen as an unfair move.

Now, some gamers have devised a clever method to gain access to theseMortal Kombat 1skins. According to iScreamFCG on Twitter, for example, all last season items can still be purchased with Dragon Krystals by changing the console’s date to before November 6. Then, after spending the in-game currency and obtaining the items, players could change the date back to the present again, and keep full access to the skins. While the player used this method on PS5,some gamers on Reddithave tried it on other platforms, such as AdmirableEstimate258, which confirmed the trick also worked on the Switch.

At the time of this report, the trick was still working. However, it’s obvious that NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games want to protect their profits, so it would not be surprising if a hotfix or small update was released to prevent players from using this trick.

A few weeks ago,Warner Bros. revealed it wants to invest more in live services. The information was unveiled during a quarterly earning call, in which WB Discovery president David Zaslav explained that there is unexplored potential in live services and F2P games and that the company would explore this in the future.

So far,Mortal Kombat 1’s monetization seems like a blueprint for that plan, as it has been aggressively pushing monetization of cosmetics and even unique content such as characters and Fatalities for a game that already costs $70. For instance, the popular Omni-Man character is only available via a DLC that costs $8. Also,Mortal Kombat 1is selling Thanksgiving fatalities. This $10 DLC Fatality Bundle sparked outrage among the game’s fanbase, especially considering that there was a similar bundle during Halloween and another one is expected for Christmas.
