With the newest entry in the long-running violent fighting game franchise on the way, NetherRealm Studios has already teased multiple characters set to appear. A trailer shown at the recent DreamCon 2023 would revealMortal Kombat 11antagonist Gerasfor the game, his second appearance in the franchise. Now, recent teasers suggest a franchise old-timer may be making a comeback.

First debuting in arcades in 1997,Mortal Kombat 4introduced several characters that would become mainstays within the franchise. The nefarious sorcerer and antagonist Quan Chi would first appear inMortal Kombat 4, as well as the god of wind and Raiden’s trusted ally, Fujin. While Kai would debut as a Shaolin monk with a close connection to Liu Kang, the character would only see one more appearance as a playable character in 2006’sMortal Kombat: Armageddon. Now, many fans believe Kai may be coming back inMortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombatdirector Ed Boon would recently take to Twitter to acknowledge a mystery character featured withinMortal Kombat 1’s previously mentioned DreamCon 2023 trailer. Appearing in one scene of the trailer is an unknown character not yet announced for the game, with many likening his appearance to Kai. Kai was reportedly considered for playability as recently asMortal Kombat X, with many feeling the character will be making hisreturn to theMortal Kombatcast. Some fans, skeptical of the theories, have claimed the character’s appearance is significantly different to that of Kai’s past showings.

Another leading theory about the identity of the character suggestsMortal Kombat 1will add a character based onthe recentMortal Kombatmovie adaptation. Some fans have suggested that the film’s protagonist, Cole Young, may be debuting within the game series as a playable character. Young had reportedly been considered as a DLC fighter forMortal Kombat 11following the movie’s debut. However, it’s been stated in the past that Cole Young will not be on theMortal Kombat 1roster, debunking that particular theory.

While the jury is still out on the identity of the mystery character,Mortal Kombat 1has already revealed several inclusions on its first “Kombat Pack” DLC. NetherRealm would announce a pair of modern superhero franchises will join the fighting game, withInvincible’s Omni-Man andThe Boys’Homelander appearingwithin the game.
