Lies of P, the hit Soulslike inspired by the story of Pinocchio, has received update 1.3.0.0, which gives players a leg up early on in their adventure through Krat. As one of the most anticipated games of 2023,Lies of Phas sold over a million copies in under two months and has just recently been nominated for Best Art Direction and Best RPG at the Game Awards. It’s been widely considered as one of the best Soulslike games not developed by FromSoftware.
Lies of Pputs players in the shoes of Geppetto’s puppet Pinocchioas they traverse the Paris-inspired Belle Epoque city of Krat, which has been ravaged by a gruesome puppet frenzy. The game may stylistically evoke FromSoftware’sBloodbornewith its dark and dreary city environments, but its brutally challenging, fast-paced gameplay is more in line withSekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Players still receive some damage when blocking, which they can regain by landing hits, butLies of P’s Perfect Guard essentially functions as a parry. With the right timing, players won’t take any damage and can build stagger on the enemy or even break the enemy’s weapon.

Nearing two months since launch,Lies of Phas revealed update 1.3.0.0, this time aiming to help alleviate players' struggles in the earlier hours of the game. Perhaps the most important change comes to the Rising Dodge ability, which lets players dodge back up after they’ve been knocked down. It previously had to be unlocked through the P-Organ system, but it’s now available to players from the start of the game. The update also puts two more Quartz, the material needed to upgrade the P-Organ, inPolendina’s shop at Hotel Kratduring the game’s earlier hours. Additionally, the update decreases the difficulty of all field enemies, among other tweaks to various weapons, Fable Arts, and status ailments that air in favor of the player.
Update 1.3.0.0 also generously givesLies of Pplayers four new cosmetic items for free, along with a new short gray hairstyle for Pinocchio. It’s possible thatLies of P’s more hardcore Souls communitymight be turned off by the balance changes brought with this new update, as most of them seem to help make the player’s early journey a bit easier with Rising Dodge, more Quartz to spend on the P-Organ, and easier grunt enemies. That said,Lies of Pis quite a long game, and its latter half will certainly remain as supremely challenging as it’s ever been with some of those intense late game boss fights.
Time will tell whether these changes toLies of Pwill stick or if they’ll be reverted in favor of a more brutal early game experience.
