There are severalquality game releases this July, some already out, and some not out soon enough. One release to keep an eye on isRocket Arena. A bit off the radar compared to something likeGhost of Tsushima, it’s worth a look for anyone interested in arena shooters.
Rocket Arenais the latest product from EA Originals, EA’s indie production project. Coming out in two days (July 14), it features 3v3 matches where every fighter uses a different rocket launcher variant. ThinkTeam Fortress 2if everyone played a different flavor of Soldier. The game has been reworked by its creators over several years, and is finally ready to launch.

Firstimpressions ofRocket Arena’s beta have been good, with fun game modes and gameplay. According to the previews, the characters come across as a bit bland, but the flavors of rockets are interesting and fun. The beta has been free, which has allowed a lot of people to get a taste for the game, but people have been wondering if the game will stay free on release. The short answer is: no. The game will retail for $30, launching on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This is in addition to a season pass and microtransactions on cosmetics.
With the amount of content shown for the game so far, it is debatable whether or not the $30 price tag is warranted. The officialreveal trailer forRocket Arenahas shown everything the game has to offer at this point. While the arenas and fighters look fun, beta players have stated it’s good mostly in short bursts. In a game like this, the novelty of the experience can be a big selling point, but can also wear off fast. It will definitely need continued support to warrant its retail price.
To be fair, it does look like further support is on the way in the immediate future. TheRocket Arenaroadmapdetails plans for a new character, along with new maps and modes.
Another reason for the game to justify its price tag is that it’s not EA’s only project. Other games likeApex Legendsand the upcomingMadden NFL 21already have dedicated fanbases.EA has promised to address fan concerns ofMadden, something rarely done, so who knows how much support the company will give toRocket Arena. Hopefully the game turns out to be a real blast.
Rocket Arenalaunches on July 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
