Over the years video games have countless spooky stories told about them by gamers. These stories, better known ascreepypastas, are kind oflike urban myths and legendsabout videogames or peoples experiences while playing them that are shared and then get spread around the internet. The list of games that have creepypastas written about them is extremely long.

There are ones written aboutSkyrim,Fallout,Minecraftand so much more. Despite the staggering amount of stories written over time, plenty have bubbled up to the top to become rather famous. Here are some of themost famous creepypastas in gaming.
7Super Mario 64 Damned
Imagine getting a haunted version ofSuper Mario 64from a family members video game store. This is the story about a couple who, in their nostalgic desire to relive their childhood, purchased a rather specialized copy of the much belovedSuper Mario 64.Though it’s a much beloved game byMariofans everywhere, this version had been returned multiple times under suspicious circumstances.

Upon playing the game, the couple would find themselves horrified by the sight of once joyful characters brutally strung up, Mario himself being tortured to death, and various other jump scares and audio shocks. This creepypasta is known to be on the bloodier side, and it concludes with a rather startling implication.
6Sonic.exe
The story ofSonic.exegoes that a heavily modded PC version ofSonic The Hedgehogfrom 1991 was mailed from one friend to another with the message to destroy the game before it was too late. Tom, the friend who received the game, decided to play it anyway, only to find out later how big a mistake this was.
The sonic featured in this game is demented, with blood-red eyes, a sharp grin and a sadistic personality. At the end of the story, It’s implied that this evil sonic is real and can effect reality, evidenced by Tom having nightmares and finding a blood stained sonic plushie in his room after playing for too long.This creepypastahas become so infamous that it has spawned a fan driven series of its own.
5Herobrine
Herobrineis probably the most well known creepypasta in modern gaming, with its titular character even becoming a part of Minecraft’s iconography. The legend goes that amysterious figure appeared in the foggy distance of one player’s game, stalking them as they played. Attempts to figure out if it was a hidden mob or another player led to dead ends, that is until they’d received a one word private message: “stop.”

After a little more digging, the player discovered the name ‘Herobrine,’ and that it was a name used by the brother of Minecraft’s creator, Notch. Upon asking Notch directly about his brother, he simply replied that he did but that he had since passed away. Whether Herobrine is just grieving player or a ghost haunting the game, the character has become world-famous in the almost decade and a gf since his creation.
4Lavender Town Syndrome
One of, if not the most famousPokemonrelated creepypastas has to be the story of Lavender Town Syndrome.Lavender Town’s naturally creepy atmosphereled to the creation of a story where several children in Japan were stated to have committed suicide and/or went insane after vising Lavender Town inPokemonRedandGreenin 1996.
This supposed hysteria was caused by the pitch of the music that played during this level, which caused these children to hear things that adults would not. This story has gone on to inspire plenty of creepypastas of its own, with many of them building on the original’s mythos.
3Godzilla NES
This creepypasta features the 1988GodzillaNES game,Godzilla: Monster of Monsters -or rather a much spookier version of the game. Not only does this supposed version feature never before seen monsters and moretechnically impressive graphicsthan were possible in 1988, the game has a malevolent nature about it. It taunts the player (named Zachary, something the game inexplicably knew) in a very personal way as it kills him over and over again.
Only after being visited by a mysterious character named Melissa and being gifted a new monster was Zachary able to beat the game, however the experience caused him to sell the game not long after.
2Ben Drowned
As ifThe Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Maskwasn’t creepy enough,Ben Drownedis a creepypasta that only worsens this fact. The ‘Ben’ inBen Drownedrefers to the mysterious save file found on one gamer’s copy ofMajora’s Masknamed as such. This is also the name the player was referred to as while playing, even after starting a new game.
After attempting the ‘fourth day glitch,’ even more oddities began occurring, such asNPCs not being in the right place, music playing in reverse and the player receiving the message “you shouldn’t have done that” repeatedly. The story ends with this player mysteriously vanishing from his dorm one day, but not before leaving behind a single cryptic video file on 4chan.
1Pale Luna
Most gaming creepypastas focus on a fictional version of a real game, however, withPale Luna, no such game has been known to exist. It’s supposed to be an old text based game, one that perhaps nobody was able to complete due to how clunky and bug ridden it is. That is until one stubborn gamer was able to finish it, being rewarded with a set of coordinates for his work.
This foolish gamer would travel to these coordinates, only to find the head of a deceased child buried in the dirt. Though this discovery is reported to the authorities, nothing is known to have come of it. No version ofPale Lunahas ever been discovered, however, it is said that there are those willing to pay a high price forthis creepy game.
