Summary
The Legend of Zeldaand LEGO are two massive game brands that at one time would never be suspected of uniting. Ever since 2005’sLEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, the concept of a LEGO game featuring a licensed franchise has become a reality. In the years since, LEGO games have included such notable franchises asIndiana Jones,Harry Potter,Lord of the Rings,Jurassic Park, Marvel, and DC, as well as severalStar Warssequels. With an already impressive list of collaborations that are expected to grow in the future, it opens the door to a LEGO game based on pre-established video game properties, such asThe Legend of Zelda.
LEGO is no stranger to video game collaborations, with recent endeavors seeming to suggest the brand is looking to expand into this realm further. The recently announcedLEGO Fortnitemode is set to go live within Epic Games’Fortniteon December 7. LEGO’s physical sets have recently included aMinecraftline, aSuper Marioline, and now anAnimal Crossingline. There are even rumors that aLegend of ZeldaLEGO line could be next. WithLEGO and Nintendo seemingly partnering moreand games likeHyrule Warriorsestablishing a style ofZeldagame where multiple versions of characters can exist simultaneously, there is a potential opportunity for the next great crossover.
What LEGO Legend of Zelda Could Be
How The Zelda Multiverse Fits In
A LEGOLegend of Zeldagame has an interesting opportunity to capitalize on the popular multiverse trend in a way that is unique to the lore and established continuity of the series. ThoughtheZeldatimeline can be convolutedat times, it essentially splits into several branches during the events ofOcarina of Timeand each timeline continues on its own from there.
Due to the existence of time travel in the series, and the fact that side games don’t need to exist in the canon, a LEGO game featuring characters from all eras is possible. This was shown inHyrule Warriors, the Team Ninja hack-‘n-slash that included multiple versions of each character from different games.Hyrule Warriorsserves as a sort ofSmash Bros.ofThe Legend of Zelda, allowing players to select their favorite character and progress through a stage with friends. There are even weapons and items from across the series.

Hyrule Warriors and the LEGO Zelda Template
Hyrule Warriorscould serve as a solid template for a LEGOZeldagame. Whether the gameplay isWarriors-style action or something more in line witha traditionalLegend of Zeldagame, the concept still translates.Hyrule Warriorsdoes offer a good example of what a streamlinedZeldagame could look like with more arcade-style elements. Perhaps paired with mechanics from recent LEGO games likeLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga,LEGOZeldacould provide the best of both franchises.
The Skywalker Saga’s class system would be one mechanic that would transfer well. Having multiple classes for each character type, like a Link class, Zeldaclass, and so forth. The Skywalker Saga’s explorationcould also be implemented, maybe allowing for the traversal to different locations in theZeldaseries like Hyrule, Termina, Holodrum, and Labrynna. With co-op battles likeHyrule Warriors, different versions of each majorZeldacharacter, and different locations to explore with dungeons and boss battles, a LEGOZeldagame would be worth checking out.
