Right now, there’s nothing but leaks and rumors surrounding the majorHarry PotterRPG video game that is supposedly in development, but it’s enough for fans to get speculating. And naturally, a key element of anyHarry Pottergame is going to be the magic that players are able to perform, through either narrative, exploration, or combat.
The as-of-yet untitledHarry PotterRPG is rumored to be setsometime in the 1800s at Hogwarts–but just because the times will be different, that doesn’t meanallof the magic will be. Sure, one would hope that new spells will be introduced to keep things fresh inHarry Potterlore, but many spells that fans know and love could easily be made a part of the RPG’s gameplay. Let’s take a look at some of the most likely candidates from the books and movies.

Summoning Charm
The summoning charmAcciois one of the most popular spells in theHarry Potterspellcasting compendium, recognizable to fans especially from the fourth bookand movie in the series, the Goblet of Fire.Harry used it during his time as a champion in the Triwizard Tournament to survive an encounter with a dragon by summoning his Firebolt flying broom. There are plenty of possible applications for the charm in an RPG setting, from the mundane to potential use in combat and exploration.
Levitation Charm
“It’sLeviOsa.NotLevioSA.“One ofHarry Potterfans' all-time favorite charms is this famous levitation spell wingardium leviosa–so widely recognized because of Hermione’s short pronunciation lesson inSorcerer’s Stone. Here’s the real question, though: what would the game use it for? Would players be able to levitate fellow wizards, or even themselves? It seems at the very least like a spell that could be useful as an exploration mechanic.
Expelliarmus
Well, itisthe spell that directly led to the downfall of Lord Voldemort. It’s meant to be a simple disarming charm, but clearly in the right hands it has power, and it seems like a pretty logical spell to include in possible combat mechanic. After all, it’s highly unlikely that “beating” human opponentsin aHarry PotterRPGwould involve actually killing them, and far more likely that it would mean the use of spells such asexpelliarmusandstupefy.
Elemental Spells
“Elemental” refers to spells likeAguamenti, which summons a jet of water, andIncendio, which creates fire. Both could be interesting to use in combat to ward off enemies, or as a method to solving problems while exploring areas. Perhaps there are also earth and air-type spells to accompany the former two, completing the quartet of elements.

Lumos
Here’s another spell that seems like a surefire “exploration”-type spell. Lumos has a simple function: it brings a bright ball of light to the tip of a wand, illuminating the immediate area. Great for exploring dark nooks and crannies, and it’s a long-established factthat Hogwartshas plenty of those. The Forbidden Forest is also supposedly going to be a big part of the game’s plot, as “strange things” will begin to happen inside of it, so illuminating a path through the forest also doesn’t sound out of the question.
The Patronus Charm
“Expecto patronum.“As it turns out, Bloomsbury Children’s Books (the original publishers ofHarry Potterin the UK) did a survey to determine fans' favorite spell of all, and the Patronus charm won out in the end. This is the spell capable of repelling dementors, though likely whatreallydraws fans to it is the way that the spell protects its caster: by summoning a bright silver sort of spirit-animal to save the day. There’s a popular Patronus quiz up on the Pottermore site, and it would certainly be interesting if developers found a way to incorporate different types of Patronus into theHarry Pottergameas well. Part of customizing a player character is the ability to define their personality and values, both things that factor into the ultimate shape of the Patronus.
In the books, the Patronus charm was first taught to Harry byprofessor Remus Lupin, to help him fend off dementors that seemed continually drawn to Harry. Fans got a sense of how varied Patronus forms can be when Harry, in turn, taught Dumbledore’s Army how to do it. Since the rumor mill surrounding theHarry PotterRPG currently suggests that players will take on the role of a 5th-year student, that would certainly be the right year and skill level to try and pull off a Patronus.
Will There Be Curses?
As mentioned before, it’s almost impossible to imagine a spell such asavada kedavra(the killing curse) would be part of the basic player repertoire, and not just because it’s considered an Unforgivable Curse in the wizarding world. As a matter of fact, any of the Unforgivable Curses, if used, would likely only be done so as part of the narrative and by enemy Dark Wizards (whom players will be fighting, according toleaked information about the game), not the player character. Of course, there are other curses that stand a better chance at being included, likereducto, which disintegrates or breaks objects.
Ultimately, if the player character in thisHarry PotterRPG is a 5th year just arrived at Hogwarts for the first time, being a sort of magical late-bloomer, then almost any spell could be taught to characters through their lessons. Intrigued fans will have to wait and see just what form magic inthe mysterious video gametakes.
