Summary
Grand Theft Autois one of gaming’s biggest success stories. Between its monstrous sales and prolonged player count, it’s a title that captured even the hearts of non-gamers, as the potential for pure enjoyment is evident, and still being felt ten years later. Whetherroaming the streets of Los Santoswhile trundling through the story, or being immersed in the utter mayhem of the online component, Rockstar’s 2013 goliath has something for everyone, and includes mechanics that still feel unique today. Its successor,Grand Theft Auto 6, has a lot to live up to.
After stopping off in the Wild West for 2018’sRed Dead Redemption 2, developer Rockstar Games is back to working on its magnum opus, and it’s likely thatGrand Theft Auto 6will borrow features from its predecessor to keep it grounded in some kind of reality. One of the things it would do well to poach would beGTA 5’s stock market, which is an interesting albeit basic way of generating funds in the game’s world. Evolving the stock market to be more of a simulation would add to the atmosphere greatly, and help to reward people who spend the time learning how to take advantage of it.

Rockstar’s Games Have a Money Problem
Making money inGrand Theft Auto 5can be a long, arduous process, often taking hours to do, with some comforts in both the singleplayer and online modes being very expensive. Cash is the route to a lot of fun inGrand Theft Auto, as it can be used to purchase and curate cars, weapons, and cosmetics to make each players' experience largely unique. InRed Dead Redemption 2the opposite can be true; the game gives Arthur so much money for the game’s main quests that he quickly becomes the Wild West equivalent of a millionaire. Generously giving funds to the camp does nothing for the story, so players are free to spend it largely as they wish.
Grand Theft Auto 6has to strike a balancebetween the two, making money accessible, but not give so much that it becomes game-breaking, and potentially damaging to the story as the player is already rich beyond their wildest dreams. Spending so much time trying to earn a quick buck defeats the point of the exercise.Grand Theft Autois all about finding a way to get ahead; the stock market inGTA 5went a long way to rewarding players who were smart with their money-making ideas.
The Stock Market in GTA 5 was a Brilliant Idea
While most ofthe fun inGrand Theft Auto 5come from the mischief in the game’s stunning open world, the ability to take advantage of the simple, but effective stock market goes a long way to facilitate the fun. Two in-game sites can be accessed in the game’s phone, and while there are some assassination missions tied to mastering the market, it helps to make the setting feel like it has a running, functioning economy that can be taken advantage of.
It’s an excellent progression tool that rewards brains as well as brawn, as thethree main characters inGTA 5can benefit massively from being smart with their investments. ShouldGrand Theft Auto 6return to the idea, it has the perfect chance to develop on it, and make it more immersive and complex to truly replicate the feeling of smart financial decisions paying off. It would be very interesting to see how financially successful players can get by playing the system instead of the typical criminality thatGrand Theft Autousually relies on to help players get ahead.
Grand Theft Auto 6is currently in development.
