This past week PlayStation announced that the nextGod of Wargame would not be released in 2021. As part of the announcement, it was also confirmed thatGod of Warwould be a cross-gen game, released on both PS5 and PS4. With the announcement, a wave of unacceptable negativity and harassment hit PlayStation developers, includingGod of War 2’s game director Cory Barlog. Barlog has remained communicative with his fans, even dropping a great point of comparison forGod of War’s cross-gen release plans.

In a message to Barlog on Twitter, a fan pointed out the success ofGod of War 2as a great comparison for what the newGod of Waris going through. TheoriginalGod of War 2was released on PlayStation 2 on June 11, 2025. That’s around five months after the PlayStation 3 launch, yet no PS3 version ofGod of War 2was made.God of War 2would, of course, become a critical hit and massive success.

The user who pointed this out on Twitter says at first that “no one complained” thatGod of War 2wasn’t anext-gen exclusive gamewhen it came out on PS2. Barlog pushes back on that, however. He says that people did complain, just like they are now, but that they weren’t as visible. The proliferation of social media over the past two decades has definitely given rise to echo chambers of negativity, as well as access for harassers to target professionals within the industry.

But Barlog isn’t bringing up this point to make light of it. He again points toGod of War 2and says, “that one worked out kinda ok, huh?” In other words, for all the negativity surroundingGod of War 2releasing on PS2 instead of PS3, it turned out great. The negativity was meaningless and unnecessary. That’s what Barlog appears to be saying about the current negative response to thenewGod of Warsequel coming to both PS4 and PS5.

It’s easy to see Barlog’s point of view. He’s experiencing harassment, not just for himself but for his co-workers. All he wants is for video game players and fans to let the game speak for itself. The platform won’t define whetherPlayStation’s upcomingGod of Warsequelis great or not.

Barlog could have put it even simpler, of course. Harassing game developers is never acceptable. It doesn’t matter if it’s aboutGod of War,platform wars, or any other game development subject. Barlog taking leadership of the situation is admirable, but it’s a shame he has to deal with the situation in the first place.

God of War 2is currently in development for PS4 and PS5.
